Matthias Erzberger (1875–1921) was a German politician, publicist, and prominent member of the Catholic Centre Party who played a pivotal role in German politics during World War I and the early Weimar Republic. Initially a supporter of the German war effort, he became an advocate for a negotiated peace and was instrumental in the Reichstag's Peace Resolution of 1917. In November 1918, Erzberger led the German delegation that signed the Armistice with the Allied Powers, bringing an end to hostilities on the Western Front. He subsequently served as Germany's Minister of Finance and introduced significant reforms to the national tax system. Vilified by right-wing nationalists for his role in the Armistice, Erzberger was assassinated on August 26, 1921, by members of Organisation Consul, a right-wing terrorist organization.
