Sir Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and humanitarian who, together with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, became one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Their historic ascent of the world's highest mountain remains one of the greatest achievements in mountaineering history. Hillary later participated in Antarctic expeditions and established the Himalayan Trust in 1960, supporting the construction of schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure for communities in Nepal. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and became one of New Zealand's most celebrated national figures.
