Sir George Rooke autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated June 28, 1702, aboard HMS Sovereign at St. Helens. Addressed to Mr. Clarke, the lengthy three-page letter concerns British naval command, the suspension of Rear Admiral Sir John Munden, the conduct of Captain Charles Cornewall, and the administration of the Royal Navy during the opening months of the War of the Spanish Succession. Signed "G: Rooke" at the conclusion.
Rooke acknowledges receiving orders from Prince George of Denmark to suspend Sir John Munden from his command, expressing serious reservations about the decision and concern over the consequences should his own forthcoming expedition with the Duke of Ormond prove unsuccessful.
He offers a particularly revealing assessment of naval administration, writing: "I begin to be of an opinion that the Queene will never be well searv'd att sea till she sends a Committee of her councell to see the execution of her orders."
Rooke cites the Dutch naval system as an example of effective oversight, suggesting that a similar arrangement would improve the Crown's understanding of naval operations.
The letter also addresses Captain Charles Cornewall's objections to a proposed ship assignment. Rooke strongly criticizes the officer's conduct, arguing that naval officers must accept transfers between vessels according to the needs of the service rather than personal convenience. He observes that such demands are "verie new in the discipline of the Navy."
An important piece of British naval correspondence offering a firsthand account of command disputes, naval discipline, and the political pressures confronting the Royal Navy during a critical period of European warfare.
The letter measures approximately 7 x 8.75 inches, comprising three handwritten pages on two adjoining sheets, with an integral address panel bearing contemporary docketing. Fine condition with light age toning, original folds, and minor handling wear.
Admiral Sir George Rooke (1650–1709) was a distinguished English naval commander whose career encompassed the Third Anglo-Dutch War, the Nine Years' War, and the War of the Spanish Succession. He played a prominent role in the Allied victory at the Battle of La Hogue in 1692 and commanded important naval operations under William III and Queen Anne. Rooke is particularly remembered for commanding the Anglo-Dutch fleet that captured Gibraltar in August 1704, securing a strategically vital Mediterranean stronghold that remains under British control. His naval career also included the Battle of Málaga later that year, one of the largest fleet engagements of the War of the Spanish Succession. He is regarded as one of Britain's most significant naval commanders of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
