Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919–2021) was an American poet, author, publisher, and prominent figure of the Beat Generation. He co-founded City Lights Booksellers & Publishers in San Francisco in 1953, establishing a literary institution that became central to the Beat movement. His best-known poetry collection, A Coney Island of the Mind (1958), became one of the bestselling books of American poetry. Ferlinghetti also played a pivotal role in literary history when City Lights published Allen Ginsberg's Howl and Other Poems in 1956, leading to a landmark obscenity trial that helped establish important protections for literary expression under the First Amendment.
