Sir Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist who, alongside Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, became one of the first two climbers confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Their historic ascent of the world's highest mountain remains one of the greatest achievements in the history of exploration.
Hillary subsequently participated in numerous expeditions, including the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, during which he reached the South Pole by motor vehicle in 1958. He devoted much of his later life to humanitarian work in Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, helping establish schools, hospitals, and infrastructure for Sherpa communities. Knighted in 1953, Hillary became one of the most celebrated explorers of the 20th century.
