Details:
Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated January 3, 1798, from Horse Guards, London. Written to an unidentified correspondent, the letter discusses his sister, Princess Charlotte, the Hereditary Princess of Württemberg, and her marriage to Frederick, the future King Frederick I of Württemberg. Signed "Frederick" at the conclusion.
Frederick apologizes for his delayed acknowledgment of a previous letter enclosing correspondence from his sister, writing, in part: "I have many excuses to make to you for not having acknowledged sooner the receipt of your obliging letter."
He expresses his gratitude for news of the royal couple, noting that the correspondence "clearly proves how thoroughly happy and contented both he and My Sister are, which is every thing which can be wished for them."
An interesting example of personal correspondence from a prominent member of the British royal family, offering insight into the relationships between the British monarchy and the royal houses of continental Europe.
Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Prince Frederick in military dress, captioned "Frederick Duke of York."
The letter measures approximately 7.5 x 9.25 inches. Fine condition with light age toning, original folds, and minor handling wear. The accompanying engraved portrait exhibits scattered foxing and age toning.
Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (1763–1827), was the second son of King George III and Queen Charlotte and the younger brother of King George IV. A British military commander, he served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Although his early military campaigns met with mixed success, Frederick became an important reformer of the British Army, introducing improvements in training, recruitment, discipline, administration, and officer education. His reforms helped establish the professional military organization that contributed to Britain's later successes during the Napoleonic Wars. He is also traditionally associated with the nursery rhyme "The Grand Old Duke of York."
