Arthur Carlson was a Private First Class in the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard," who served in the Caisson Platoon at Arlington National Cemetery. At just 19 years old, Carlson was selected to handle Black Jack during President John F. Kennedy's state funeral on November 25, 1963. The riderless horse, fitted with an empty saddle and reversed boots in the stirrups, symbolized the fallen commander. Carlson later recalled the difficulty of controlling Black Jack throughout the procession, an experience that became part of the history of Kennedy's funeral.
