A Charles II mythological silk raised-work embroidered picture Dated 1679 Depicting Actaeon with his antlers to the right of the central oval cartouche, the whole with silk and metal threads, initiated 'D.C', in a later carved frame, size including the frame: 55.5cm wide, 4cm deep, 39.5cm high (21 1/2in wide, 1 1/2in deep, 15 1/2in high) (the embroidery: 49cm wide x 32.5cm high) Footnotes: In Greek mythology, Actaeon was a celebrated hunter who incurred the wrath of the goddess Artemis (Diana) after inadvertently coming upon her while she bathed. As punishment, Artemis transformed him into a stag, the metamorphosis beginning with a pair of antlers emerging from his head. As recounted in Ovid's Metamorphoses, Actaeon gradually assumed the form of a deer and, unable to speak or reveal his identity, fled in terror. He was ultimately pursued and torn apart by his own hunting hounds, who failed to recognise their master in his altered guise.
