Naïve School, 19th century The Wild Ox of Chillingham with Castle and the Eildons in the distance oil on canvas 37 x 53cm (14 9/16 x 20 7/8in). Footnotes: This is a rare depiction of an animal from the Chillingham herd, most famously painted by Sir Edward Landseer (Wild cattle of Chillingham, painted in 1867). The Chillingham cattle are a rare breed of wild white cattle that have inhabited Chillingham Park in Northumberland for centuries. They have been enclosed in Chillingham Park since the 13th or 14th century, and considered to be the sole survivors of the ancient British forest herds. They are recognisable by their white coats, dark muzzles and characteristically long horns. Living as a largely unmanaged, closed herd, they retain a unique genetic heritage and offer a remarkable insight into the history of Britain's native cattle. Today, they remain an important part of the country's natural and cultural heritage. There is a population of around 120-138 animals in the herd and they are completely wild, having never been touched by human hands or received any veterinary care, it is remarkable that they exist wildly on the Scottish borders.
