Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) Tanya bronze with green patina 23 1/16 x 16 5/16 x 12 3/16 in (58.5 x 41.5 x 31 cm) Conceived in 1937 Footnotes: We are grateful to Evelyn Silber for her assistance in cataloging this lot. Provenance Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, Los Angeles. Acquired from the above by the present owner on September 1, 1976. Literature R. Buckle, Jacob Epstein Sculptor, London, 1963 (another cast illustrated pl. 360). E. Silber, The Sculpture of Epstein, with a Complete Catalogue, Oxford, 1986, no. 274 (the bronze head version illustrated p. 182). It was common for Jacob Epstein to cast three busts and up to six heads of any given sculpture. These casts could have been created any time after their date of origination, although a green patina is fairly common in his works from the 1930s. Epstein did not often sign or number his works, as is the case in the present sculpture; however, according to the knowledge available, the original cast of this sitter was a bust, and the head version that is included in the catalogue raisonné was created in an edition of eight authorized by Lady Epstein.
