Description
This is an Original US Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Sword, commonly nicknamed "Old Wristbreaker" due to its substantial weight and thick blade profile. It comes complete with the correct iron/steel scabbard configured with two suspension ring bands for securing to a cavalry saddle or belt harness. Maker marked K&C in an oval on the ricasso. This indicates it was produced in Solingen, Germany, by Kirschbaum & Co. (C.R. Kirschbaum). During the American Civil War era, both Union and Confederate forces heavily imported blade blanks and complete swords from Solingen manufacturers to meet the massive military demand. This sword is in very good condition and displays a beautiful patina consistent with age proving to be an authentic piece of Civil War History. Brass hilt shows excellent patina. Grip is nice with complete braided wire and honest wear. Leather collar pad is present. Complete curved blade is excellent and solid and still remains somewhat sharp. Measurements: 36” Blade, 41.5” Overall length, 38” Scabbard.
