Description
This vase exemplifies the luxurious aesthetic of Wedgwood's lustreware collection, created under the direction of Daisy Makeig-Jones. Shaped in a tall baluster form with a gently flared rim and circular footed base, the piece is finished in a vivid iridescent glaze over a deep cobalt ground, layered with violet, azure, and electric blue tones. The surface shimmers with mottled effects and pale streaks, creating a dynamic, multicolored luster typical of premium lustreware. At the heart of the design is a gilded rendering of the 'Celestial Dragon' - a mythological creature depicted in profile with an intense gaze, outstretched claws, and four-toed talons. The dragon is shown pursuing the 'Sacred Pearl', a traditional emblem of wisdom and enlightenment, amid golden flames and swirling clouds. Ornamental borders of alternating gold squares and fan motifs accentuate the upper rim and base. The vase's interior features a mother-of-pearl lustre glaze, producing a soft nacreous glow. This piece reflects both the Orientalist influences and imaginative themes that define the iconic Fairyland Lustre series. The underside bears the printed Wedgwood Portland Vase mark with "Made in England," and the pattern number Z4829 appears near the foot.
