A vintage, Swiss-made watch believed to be manufactured by the Royce Watch Company. Family was of utmost importance to Duke Ellington. He attributed his great success to his parents- Daisy and James "J.E." Ellington- because of the confidence they gave him that helped him overcome the racial barriers of his time. He expressed his devotion to his parents long after their deaths with his composition "My Mother, My Father." During their lives, he gave generously to them. This pocket watch was the first extravagant gift Duke gave to his father, J.E., in the 1930s, after Duke began to experience fame. This hand-crafted, Swiss-made pocket watch is made from platinum and is encrusted in diamonds. It serves as a timeless reminder of the deep gratitude Duke had for his roots. It was the most significant material gift Duke gave to his father, who treasured it until his death in 1937. This beautiful timepiece is in working condition and was recently serviced. At the time of service, several knowledgeable watch experts voiced their opinion that the watch, indeed, was extremely fine and most likely sold, when new, by Cartier.
