A large German Stein in relief-moulded "Cameo" stoneware. Incised tower mark, Mettlach, VB (for Villeroy & Bosch) and 02 for 1902. The inside white glazed, the exterior relief-moulded with mock-Mediaeval scenes depicting the drunkard's progress: starting up with cheers in the company of friends, then spiralling down towards the bitter end, where the drunkard is being kicked out and left in the gutter. The scenes are taking place within a framework of Gothic arches and are accompanied by German sentences on drink and temperance, this all supported by a circle of drunkards down in the mud among toads and lizards. Height: "15¾/ 40 cm. Condition: the bottom part restuck as seen on photo. Nothing has been added, and the vessel is ready to use for its original purpose, since the damage is well below the interior bottom level.
