1768 DATED HAND FORGED FLAX COMB
Item Details
Description
Hand hammered square spikes on wood base that is dated 1768 twice. The wood cover has early hand fitted dovetails. This is the earliest complete Flax Comb with cover that we are aware having hand forged square spikes. Flax combs are called different names for different reasons, perhaps area of origin. Some names encountered are flax hackle, heckle, hatchel, or hetchel. These names essentially describe a heavy board containing rows of teeth or spikes used for combing the flax fibers. Usually three combs were used going from a coarse to a fine toothed comb. Flax (Linum usitatissimum), also known as common flax or linseed, is a flowering plant in the family Linaceae. It is cultivated as a food and fiber crop in cooler regions of the world. Textiles made from flax are known in Western countries as linen. Flax fibers taken from the stem of the plant are two to three times as strong as cotton fibers. Additionally, flax fibers are naturally smooth and straight. Europe and North America both depended on flax for plant-based cloth until the 19th century, when cotton overtook flax as the most common plant. Would have been a staple house hold tool in the 18th century to make clothing material. Only dated example with hand dove tail lid we are aware of. Phil Majerich Collection
