CHICAGO – Wright‘s semiannual American Design auction event takes place on Tuesday, August 15, featuring highlights from famed postwar Modernist designer Edward Wormley. The auction catalog and bidder signups are now available at LiveAuctioneers.com.

The 262-lot event contains icons of the Modernist movement, including tables, chairs, desks, shelf systems, wall art and posters. The sale features the biggest names of the Modernist movement, including Charles and Ray Eames, Nelson & Associates, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard.

But the selection of Wormley pieces should take center stage when bidding begins.

The pieces in this sale come with a nice provenance – they were acquired directly from Dunbar Furniture Co. by the original owner and come by descent. Most are classic mid-century forms that are pictured in The Dunbar Book of Modern Furniture, the design catalog issued by the Indiana manufacturers in 1953.

Below is a selection of highlights showcasing Wormley’s minimalist, practical style. These include two pairs of the walnut and mahogany Model 5264 shelf bookcase that dates to circa 1949. These are estimated at $5,000-$7,000 and $3,000-$5,000, respectively.

ATLANTA – Just shy of 60 years since Henri Hecht Maïk (1922-1993) held his first exhibition in the US, five paintings by the French naïve artist will be auctioned on Friday, August 25 at Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery. Paris-born Maïk referred to himself as a primitive painter of dream-like jungle scenes. The dealership Wally Findlay Galleries hosted the first US exhibition of Maïk’s paintings in New York in 1964 and continued to hold many successful shows in New York, Chicago, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills and Paris.

The five whimsical pictures were all bought at Wally Findlay Galleries and most carry labels on the reverse.

A large-format oil on canvas measuring 4ft 3in by 3ft 2in carries an estimate of $8,000-$16,000. The Yellow Lion depicting a lion and a cub in a technicolor jungle landscape is boldly signed and dated [19]72 and titled in French on the verso.

Smaller 9 by 13in oils on a similar theme range from $2,000-$4,000 (for Tiger in the Grass, 1980) to $5,000-$7,000 each for Lion and Un Roy.

A watercolor and gouache on paper titled Poussin and dated 1975, depicting a lion, giraffe, zebra and other birds looking down on a chick, is expected to sell at $2,000-$4,000.

The second day of the sale includes French art from the previous century – a portrait of Hortense Eugenie Cecile Bonaparte by Jean Louis Victor Viger Du Vigneau (1819-97). This half-length portrait of the queen consort of Holland wearing a pearl diadem and a gold-trimmed white silk gown is one of several by the artist who made his name painting the elegant men and women of the Second Empire. It is consigned from the estate of the Atlanta lawyer Martin David Merritt (1933-2022) and has an estimate of $25,000-$35,000.

DALLAS — After a fierce bidding war, a 1966 Japanese domestic-market Batmobile tin toy set a record at $150,000 as the top lot in Heritage Auctions‘ Ultimate Batman Collection Signature auction.

Made by leading Japanese toymaker Yonezawa, the friction-powered Toyopet (Toyota) Crown with Batman at the wheel, which survived with its original box, is now the most valuable Batman toy ever auctioned.

In all, the sold-out August 4-5 event brought in a whopping $1,395,762.

“Japanese Batman tin toys certainly made their mark,” said Heritage Consignment Director of Action Figures and Toys, Justin Caravoulias. “They accounted for more than $459,000 of the total.”

More than 1,000 bidders worldwide participated in the sale packed with toys, dolls, robots, action figures, dioramas, original packaging art, prized trinkets and other memorabilia featuring Batman, Robin and their famous foes. These treasures, most in or with their original packaging, also spanned the globe, hailing from Japan, England, the United States, South America, Europe and beyond.

“This weekend’s results show, as we’ve long known, that there is an incredible international appetite for Japanese popular culture,” says Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena. “These Japanese toy rarities are largely unknown except in Japan, but it’s clear from this auction’s runaway success that a worldwide audience is eager to bid on and compete for the best of the best in character collectibles.”
