GENESEO, N.Y. — A lifetime of public service and private collecting come to light with the auction of the Hugh Douglas Barclay (1932-2021) estate by Cottone Auctions on Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30. Bidding is now available at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2).

Barclay was an attorney in upstate New York and entered politics in 1965, serving as a New York state senator until 1984. Having worked as a board member for an organization owned by President George H. W. Bush, Barclay was eventually appointed ambassador to El Salvador by President George W. Bush, serving from late 2003 until 2006.

The Barclay collection dominates Day 1 of the sale and includes a large selection of silver items, historic Americana and other objects found in a well-appointed home. This Paul Storr (London, 1819) set of George III silver wine coolers, liners and stands is in remarkable condition, and carries an estimate of $50,000-$80,000.

Perfect for any dinner setting, the Barclay collection also includes two Georg Jensen five-light candelabras from the 1925-1932 period and weighing 408 troy ounces. They are estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Day 1 expands beyond the Barclay estate to include nearly 40 Tiffany Studios items, mostly the highly sought-after table lamps. A circa-1915 Tiffany Studios dichroic Jeweled Dragonfly table lamp with the Pony Tree Trunk base is an example of the fine quality found in this group. It is estimated at $50,000-$80,000.

Day 2 is dominated by clocks and timepieces. A leading example is a circa-1850 Aaron Dodd Crane carousel year-going astronomical timepiece from the Boston Clock Company. With a gilt frame on a marble base and wonderful action, it is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — An early 19th-century pearlware figure was the surprise performer when 200 lots from the Flower collection were offered by Lion & Unicorn on August 27.

This 8in (2cm) high figure of a Scotsman in traditional attire alongside a hunting dog is known as the Deer Stalker and follows a contemporary print of the same title. Like most pieces from this period, it is unmarked, but it is thought to have been made circa 1820 in the Staffordshire pot bank of Obadiah Sherratt. A scarce and popular model known from a number of premier Staffordshire pottery collections, it was modestly estimated at $100-200 but realized $3,100 ($3,875 with buyer’s premium).

The property lawyer Edward Flower (1929-2022) and his wife Marilyn (1930-2017) were inveterate collectors. First it was American Impressionism, then artist-signed prints, then British and American art pottery and glass, and, most significant of all, majolica. The 600-piece Flower collection of majolica is being offered by specialists Strawser Auction Group across three sales in Pennsylvania – the first held on August 23. Some 61 lots of English pottery was sold by Doyle New York in December.

Leading this Floridian segment of the Flower collection at $4,100 ($5,250 with buyer’s premium) was a Charles Vyse (1882-1971) Punch & Judy figure group dating to circa 1928. This 12in (30cm) model of a street musician with his dog in front of the traditional puppet theater booth is typical of the slip-cast figure of everyday Londoners that Vyse — a Staffordshire potter through and through — made at the studio he established with his wife Nell at Cheyne Walk in Chelsea from 1919.

Another version of this model sold for £8,000 (roughly $10,000) at Bonhams in November 2006, while more recently, in January 2019, one brought £6,600 (about $8,300) at Henry Adams Auctions in Chichester.

CHICAGO – Avocado Salad and Blueberry Pie are on the menu at Hindman’s Thursday, September 28 auction of Post War & Contemporary Art. The 116-lot sale includes these two classic Pop Art works by Wayne Thiebaud and Claes Oldenberg that have been consigned from the estate of Kansas City collectors Morton and Estelle Sosland. Morton Sosland (1925-2019) had a long and successful career in foodstuffs, so it’s fitting the sale includes two depictions of American culinary favorites.

Wayne Thiebaud’s still life of an avocado salad from 1962 was acquired by the Soslands from the Allan Stone Galleries in New York in or around 1968. Typical of the artist’s colorful output that focused on the commonplace objects found in America’s diners and cafeterias, it is estimated at $1.2 million-$1.8 million.

Estelle Sosland was the Nelson-Atkins Museum’s first woman trustee. The couple donated one of the nation’s finest private collections of American Indian art to the museum and in 1994 commissioned Shuttlecocks, the sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen that graces the Nelson-Atkins’s lawn and became its logo.

The husband-and-wife artists were the creators of a much smaller cast aluminum and painted acrylic sculpture titled Blueberry Pie a la Mode, Flying, Scale B. Number 3 from a 1998 edition of 3, it was bought from the Grant Selwyn Fine Art gallery in New York the following year, and it is estimated at $150,000-$250,000.

Hindman is gaining fame for selling the works of local artist Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977), and there are two in the sale.

Estimated at $100,000-$150,000 is the 1941 oil on canvas titled John Carradine remembered from Man Hunt.

An unusual subject in Abercrombie’s oeuvre – but typical of her mature style – the picture displays the artist’s admiration for the actor John Carradine and a 1941 film which took an overt anti-Nazi position prior to the United States’ involvement in the Second World War. The painting was a gift from the artist and came to the present owner in 1974.

Dubbed “the Queen of the Bohemians” in a Chicago social circle that included the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, Abercrombie was at her most prolific and productive in the 1940s and the early ’50s before alcoholism and arthritis took hold.

A later work from 1960 is the oil-on-Masonite Lady with Black Braid. It, too, comes to auction for the first time, having been bought by the owner’s family from the Devorah Sherman Gallery in Chicago in 1961. It is estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

PHILADELPHIA — Subject matter ranging from Revolutionary War and anti-slavery tracts to Central American ruins and the Lindbergh baby kidnapping add fascinating color to the Freeman’s Books and Manuscripts sale scheduled for Wednesday, September 27. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s diverse selections symbolize a walk through a wide range of Western history and literature. The lot with the highest estimate is a first edition of Frederick Catherwood’s 1844 travelog Views of the Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan. One of just 300 copies printed, the book was the third in a series of first-hand accounts of ancient Mayan ruins encountered by Catherwood, a draftsman, and archaeologist John Lloyd Stephens during 1839-1842 expeditions. The book comes with 25 tinted lithographic plates engraved after Catherwood’s on-scene illustrations. So important were these works at the time that Edgar Allen Poe called the author’s 1843 Incidents of Travel in Yucatan “the most interesting book of travel ever published.” The lot carries an estimate of $30,000-$50,000.

One of the greatest minds among the American Founding Fathers belonged to Thomas Paine. Though only a recent 1774 arrival to the colonies, Paine’s Common Sense was the first widely distributed pamphlet to call for independence from the crown. Freeman’s has a rare 1776 Philadelphia copy of the document in the sale, estimated at $15,000-$25,000.

Quakers, a Protestant Christian group, have long been a part of the American fabric. Their early, 18th-century advocacy for the abolition of slavery set them apart from mainstream thinking at the time. Observations on the Inslaving, importing and purchasing of Negroes by Anthony Benezet was the first Quaker-related pamphlet to speak to the realities of the slave trade. Published in 1759, Freeman’s has a first edition of this important document with clear provenance to the original owner, James Moon, a Bucks County Quaker abolitionist. The pamphlet has an estimate of $15,000-$25,000.

New Jersey Detective Ellis H. Parker was one of the investigators of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and murder. Notably, it was Parker who felt Bruno Hauptmann, convicted of the crime, to be innocent. A trove of his contemporaneous notes and other documents related to the investigation is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

A signed presentation first edition copy of Ray Bradbury’s seminal The Martian Chronicles leads a large group of more contemporary American literature. Inscribed by Bradbury hoping he could “continue to entertain you,” the book is estimated at $1,200-$1,800.
