CHICAGO — Wright and Toomey & Co. will launch the inaugural Elevated: Art Via Chicago sale on Friday, February 23. It features 20th-century art from important Chicago collections with an emphasis on artists and movements that have shaped the Chicago art world during the last 100 years, such as the Chicago Imagists, Hairy Who?, Monster Roster, and Chicago Modernists. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The auction lineup is led by Chicago Bohemian surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977), who is represented by three originals. The 1954 oil-on-Masonite Sunset offers classic themes found in all her works: dark, foreboding and barren landscape; a female figure (usually the artist); and some occult-like inclusion — in this case, an owl. The painting is estimated at $70,000-$90,000.

Ed Paschke (1939-2004) lived most of his life in Chicago, and enjoyed a remarkably varied and successful career, even creating racy cartoons for Playboy Magazine. The sale includes four of his works, with Origin clocking in at $20,000-$30,000. Featuring Paschke’s trademark precision-rendered illustrations, the 1995 oil on linen was purchased directly from the artist by the consignor.

Born in Chicago to Swedish immigrant parents, Gladys Nilsson (b. 1940-) was a member of the Hairy Who? group of Chicago Imagists that gained prominence in the late 1960s. Wright has four of her works in the Elevated sale. A. Artyst is a 1987 watercolor on paper with a collection of quirky characters surrounding the central figure. It’s estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

Margo Hoff (1910-2008) created Dream of Flying early in her art career, in 1950. The eerie, floating body over the landscape is an oil on Masonite and measures 39.375 by 19.375in. It is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

CHICAGO – Avocado Salad and Blueberry Pie are on the menu at Hindman’s Thursday, September 28 auction of Post War & Contemporary Art. The 116-lot sale includes these two classic Pop Art works by Wayne Thiebaud and Claes Oldenberg that have been consigned from the estate of Kansas City collectors Morton and Estelle Sosland. Bidding is available via LiveAuctioneers.

Morton Sosland (1925-2019) had a long and successful career in foodstuffs, so it’s fitting the sale includes two depictions of American culinary favorites.

Wayne Thiebaud’s still life of an avocado salad from 1962 was acquired by the Soslands from the Allan Stone Galleries in New York in or around 1968. Typical of the artist’s colorful output that focused on the commonplace objects found in America’s diners and cafeterias, it is estimated at $1.2 million-$1.8 million.

Estelle Sosland was the Nelson-Atkins Museum’s first woman trustee. The couple donated one of the nation’s finest private collections of American Indian art to the museum and in 1994 commissioned  Shuttlecocks, the sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen that graces the Nelson-Atkins’s lawn and became its logo.

The husband-and-wife artists were the creators of a much smaller cast aluminum and painted acrylic sculpture titled Blueberry Pie a la Mode, Flying, Scale B. Number 3 from a 1998 edition of 3, it was bought from the Grant Selwyn Fine Art gallery in New York the following year, and it is estimated at $150,000-$250,000.

Hindman is gaining fame for selling the works of local artist Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977), and there are two in the sale.

Estimated at $100,000-$150,000 is the 1941 oil on canvas titled John Carradine remembered from Man Hunt.

An unusual subject in Abercrombie’s oeuvre – but typical of her mature style – the picture displays the artist’s admiration for the actor John Carradine and a 1941 film which took an overt anti-Nazi position prior to the United States’ involvement in the Second World War. The painting was a gift from the artist and came to the present owner in 1974.

Dubbed “the Queen of the Bohemians” in a Chicago social circle that included the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, Abercrombie was at her most prolific and productive in the 1940s and the early ’50s before alcoholism and arthritis took hold.

A later work from 1960 is the oil-on-Masonite Lady with Black Braid. It, too, comes to auction for the first time, having been bought by the owner’s family from the Devorah Sherman Gallery in Chicago in 1961. It is estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

Bewitching Gertrude Abercrombie work appears at Affiliated Auction, Aug. 23

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A prime-period work by Gertrude Abercrombie headlines the merchandise at Affiliated Auction on Wednesday, August 23. The textbook Surrealist oil on Masonite is consigned from a Philadelphia collection with an estimate of $10,000-$30,000. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Dubbed ‘the Queen of the Bohemians’ in a Chicago social circle that included the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, Abercrombie (1909-1977) was at her most prolific and productive in the 1940s and the early 50s, before alcoholism and arthritis took hold.

This 12-by-9in image of a lone woman in a flowing gown and standing near a lifeless tree is dated ‘[19]46]’ and depicts one of the artist’s core themes.

Largely self-taught, she said of her work: “I am not interested in complicated things nor in the commonplace. I like and like to paint simple things that are a little strange. My work comes directly from my inner consciousness, and it must come easily. It is a process of selection and reduction.”

The picture has old labels to the back for The Gallery on 55th Street, Chicago, and another with the price of $95.00. It is consigned from the same private collection as another Abercrombie oil of a similar size and subject, Let It Go, also dated 1946, which the auction house sold in September 2022. It hammered at $32,000.
