CHICAGO — A dazzling array of magicana, some of which is coming to market for the first time, enters the stage at Potter & Potter’s Select Secrets sale, scheduled for Saturday, December 9. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Every respectable magic sale manages to conjure material relating to Erik Weisz (1874 – 1926), best known as Harry Houdini. Potter & Potter secured 18 Houdini-related lots, topped by this fantastic stone-lithography promotional poster. The artwork depicts Houdini preparing for his Milk Can Escape routine, with a cutaway view showing him crouched within while assistants pour water and eventually “lock” him inside. The 40 by 30in poster has minor restoration to fold lines and corners, and is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Suzy Wandas (birth name Jeanne Van Dyk, 1896-1986) is largely forgotten today, but was considered a star at manipulation magic, using cards, cigarettes, or anything at her disposal to demonstrate classic sleight of hand. Billed as “the lady with the fairy fingers,” she retired in 1959 and married a fellow performer. A collection of items related to her career is another prominent segment of the sale, headed by her touring gear and props, representing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of magic history. It is estimated at $5,000-$8,000.

Famed English magician John Nevil Maskelyne (1839-1917) was an early version of The Amazing Randi (James Randi, 1928-2020) — part skeptic and 100% illusionist. Maskelyne as a youth watched a Gloucestershire performance by the American traveling spiritualist act The Davenport Brothers. Maskelyne immediately figured out the illusion, built a cabinet and gave a presentation showing local townspeople how they had been fooled by the Americans. Randi, of course, became best known late in his career for debunking psychic Uri Geller and other spiritualists. Trained as a watchmaker, this tool kit given by the Maskelyne family to the consigner was the prized possession of the famed magician. It is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

JAMESVILLE, N.Y. — Worldwide demand for historic military artifacts continues to grow as established collections and estates are liquidated and return to the market. CNY Militaria & Collectibles is a leading house specializing in the category, and its 583-lot sale slated for Saturday, December 9 illustrates the dizzying array of collectibles from the U.S. and foreign armed forces available today. Two key lots from the sale are military-themed but are actually screen-worn props from American films. This outfit worn by John Wayne in John Ford’s 1950 classic She Wore A Yellow Ribbon comes with direct provenance from Western Costume Company and has been photo-matched. It includes a tag showing alterations performed for Wayne to allow him to fit (he was a big man for his day). The outfit is estimated at $2,500-$4,000.

Next up is a photo-matched pair of German Luftwaffe caps worn by future President Ronald Reagan in the 1942 war movie Desperate Journey. In it, Reagan and co-star Errol Flynn are members of a British bomber team downed behind enemy lines. The German insignia on the caps are from their daring escape while dressed as German regulars. One cap features a baby-pinned tag reading “Ronald Regan” (sic) and labels from United Costumers of Hollywood. The pair of caps is estimated at $750-$1,500.

A battle-flown flag from the USS El Dorado, the command ship that oversaw the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, comes with direct provenance from the former International War Flag Museum, operated by World War I veteran Dr. Clarence Rungee. All the flags in his museum were fully documented, and he had a preference for flags flown in battle. Representing an opportunity to own a battle-flown flag from World War II’s Pacific theater, the lot is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio — Magnum Auctions has announced a two-day Deck The Halls with Antiques sale for Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10, featuring a stellar lineup of art glass from nearly every possible category, much of it in fine or better condition. With more than 880 lots in all, the two catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

One of the sale’s star attractions is a vaseline Greentown rose garland pattern water pitcher. As the catalog’s humorous notes say, “How many are out there, folks? What an exciting find!” At 8.5in in height, the pitcher carries a $1,000-$2,500 estimate.

Described as “excellent,” a Meriden silverplate and amberina double-cherub bride’s basket centerpiece features beautiful color and terrific condition for a vintage art glass item. It is estimated at $900-$1,500.

Dating to 1905 and the pride of Martins Ferry, Ohio, Fenton art glass is an enduring symbol of American design. This Fenton ‘buttons and braids’ amythest opalescent glass water pitcher is undated and stands 9.5in tall. It has a $600-$1,200 estimate.

Rounding out the art glass highlights is a Victorian water pitcher in blue opalescent glass with a floral eyelet design. Described as “very rare,” it is estimated at $1,500-$3,000.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Five unique Polaroid test shots and the Hasselblad camera from Dick Zimmerman’s photo shoot for Michael Jackson’s Thriller LP are the star lots at Blackwell Auctions on Saturday, December 9. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

“The auction would have been outstanding even without the celebrity items, but then the unexpected treasures started arriving just before the consignment cutoff. That suddenly took the auction lineup to the next level,” said Edwin Bailey of Blackwell Auctions.

The Michael Jackson items will all be auctioned individually, and the Polaroid images come with a Dick Zimmerman LOA and photographer’s release conveying ownership of the test photo’s copyright to the winning bidder (note that no personality rights are conveyed). The top lot is the shot that would become the design for the final cover, estimated at $10,000-$20,000.

Zimmerman’s Hasselblad 500ELX camera, which he used during the 1982 Thriller photo shoot, comes with an LOA from Zimmerman and is estimated at $10,000-$20,000 also.

The Green Berets by Robin Moore, himself a retired member of the elite force, served as a powerful metaphor for the American military during the Vietnam Era. A galley proof of the unpublished book was sent by Moore to John Wayne (1907-1979), who was immediately moved to purchase the film rights. Wayne’s granddaughter Anita Swift has consigned this piece of Duke history with an estimate of $4,000-$8,000.

Peter Max (b. 1937-) appears in the sale with a 2011 mixed media on paper titled 9/11 Tenth Anniversary. Max’s respectful depiction of the New York City skyline includes the Twin Towers and, in the foreground, the Pentagon. Measuring 22½ by 30in, it is signed and personally inscribed on the verso, and is estimated at $3,000-$6,000.

A selection of George Nakashima New chairs has been apportioned into three consecutive auction lots. Two lots (Lot 5, Lot 6) include a pair of dining armchairs estimated at $4,000-$8,000, while a third lot contains four dining side chairs together estimated at $6,000-$12,000. All are signed Nakashima and dated Sept. 27, 1986 beneath the seat.
