‘Protest furniture’ by Brazilian Jose Zanine Caldas featured at Wright March 28

Jose Zanine Caldas, Namoradeira tete-a-tete rocker, estimated at $50,000-$70,000 at Wright.

CHICAGO — A signature example of ‘protest furniture’ by Brazilian designer Jose Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) is among the starring lots in the Wright Design sale on Thursday, March 28. Previously in a collection in Sao Paulo, the Namoradeira tete-a-tete rocker dating to circa 1963-1967 was consigned by a vendor in New York and is estimated at $50,000-$70,000. The sale catalog is open for bidding on LiveAuctioneers.

For more than a decade in the 1940s, Zanine Caldas ran a workshop in Sao Paulo where he made detailed scale models for top Brazilian architects, and later, plywood furniture inspired by European modernism. However, he soon tired of capitalism and instead moved back to his native Bahia, where he began to create furniture that was later called Móveis Denúncia – which translates to ‘protest furniture’. Inspired by local vernacular crafts and the natural resources around him, furnishings such as this rocker were often fashioned from a single piece of Brazilian hardwood. The rocker, with the branded signature Zanine, is pictured in the artist’s biography that was published in 2020.

Commanding top-lot status in this 254-lot auction is a pair of Gio Ponti lacquered wood, upholstery, and brass Triennale armchairs, dating to 1951. In this design for ISA, Bergamo, Ponti deconstructed the traditional form of the wing-back chair, inserting a metal frame within the wooden structure of the upholstered backrest to reinforce the apparently weightless form. This pair, with manufacturer’s labels to the back stretchers, have a provenance to Count Luigi Baldini of Ravenna, whose family owned several important Ponti designs. They are estimated at $70,000-$90,000.

A 1987 triple sliding door cabinet by George Nakashima in American black walnut inset with Indian mirrored glass is another exceptional piece. It was acquired directly from the artist in 1987 by Dr. Mortimer Dubovsky of New York and comes by descent. The cabinet is signed to the back with the client’s name, Duubovsky, and is sold with digital copies of the original invoice, drawings, and order card. Its estimate is $45,000-$65,000.

The sale also includes 10 lots designed by Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967), many of which were made for the Chandigarh project. The Swiss artist, architect, and designer worked with his cousin Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (who assumed the pseudonym Le Corbusier) to create much of the Indian city’s civic architecture, including 14 different types of mass housing, plus furniture for some of the public buildings. A pair of teak and canework benches dating to circa 1956 from the MLA Flats building will be offered with an estimate of $12,000-$15,000.

No fewer than three Harry Bertoia Sonambients are part of the March 28 sale lineup. Beginning in 1960, Bertoia made thousands of these sounding sculptures, ranging from six inches to 20 feet in size, to produce all kinds of aesthetic, sonic, and kinetic properties.

Dating to 1963 is Untitled (Sonambient), formed of 81 3ft 6in high rods of beryllium copper and brass. The work was acquired directly from the artist by Sally Walsh of Houston, Texas in the year it was made, and it appears at auction for the first time with an estimate of $40,000-$60,000.

Masters of 20th-century furniture design command attention at LAMA Feb. 28

Sam Maloof rocking chair, estimated at $20,000-$30,000 at LAMA.

VAN NUYS, Calif. — Some of the most important names in 20th-century furniture design are represented in the upcoming Design Auction at Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) on Wednesday, February 28. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The 202-lot sale is headed by this rocking chair from Sam Maloof (1916-2009). It was acquired directly from the artist in 1989 and is marked No. 45 1989 Sam Maloof f.A.C.C. ? to the underside. Described in the lot notes as being in ‘very good vintage condition,’ the chair is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Luisa, Marchesa Casati Stampa di Soncino (1881-1957) was an Italian heiress, muse, and art patron — along with being something of a public eccentric. According to LAMA, the marquess commissioned this bench from furniture designer Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940). Featuring what appears to be Arabic script decorations and what remains of the original silk tassels, the underside provides the tell, with Casati marked there. The bench is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

The Larkin family of Maple Glen, Pennsylvania made a wise choice when they ordered this cabinet from Nakashima Studios in 1957. Now debuting at auction some 67 years after purchase, the cabinet is in fine condition and comes with a digital copy of the original purchase order. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

The sale includes 17 works by Jacques Adnet (1900-1984), the renowned French designer best remembered for his innovative use of leather and metal in his furniture. This sideboard cabinet is constructed of saddle-stitched leather over steel with oak and brass elements. It is dated to around 1955 and carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

No 20th-century furniture sale would be complete without an example from Charles and Ray Eames. The husband-and-wife design powerhouse created La Chaise for the 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. However, it was not actually produced for retail until the 1990s by Vitra in Switzerland. This example is from around 2000 and is made of lacquered polyester resin, chrome-plated steel, and oak and is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. — Back-to-back sales from Rago promise collectors of vintage art pottery and ceramics and modern designs from Nakashima and Bertoia a tremendous opportunity, with more than 300 lots across both sales. Early 20th Century Design and Modern Design happen on Thursday, January 18, and Friday, January 19, respectively, and both catalogs are now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Day 1 kicks off with a bounty of 26 George Ohr pieces, ranging from his famed deformed works to more traditional designs. The highest-estimated Ohr piece is a notable snake vase dated to the 1897-1900 period. Standing 9.5in tall, it features two snakes, two ribbon handles, and an indigo, emerald, black, and gunmetal glaze. It includes an impressed signature to the underside G. E. OHR, Biloxi, Miss and is estimated at $45,000-$65,000.

Art Nouveau specialists Van Briggle Pottery (1901-2012) are also well represented in the sale with 10 items. Co-founder Artus Van Briggle takes the top slot among his pottery’s works here with what the lot notes call a “rare and early” Despondency vase. Topped with an agonized human figure, the base is marked AA Van Briggle 1902 92-8 70 and is in stunning condition. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

The final group in Day 1 comes from the Grueby Faience Company of Revere, Massachusetts. An ‘exceptional’ squat vase with water lilies designed by Florence Liley for Grueby Faience has a manufacturer’s mark and number to its base: Grueby Faience Co. Boston U.S.A. 184 and FSL. It carries a $15,000-$20,000 estimate.

Day 2 features four works by Harry Bertoia (1915-1978), each from a different group of designs for which the artist would make numerous iterative variations. Estimated at $50,000-$70,000 is Untitled (Bush Form) from 1968. Acquired from Bertoia and in the same collection since, this is its first appearance at auction.

Fans of the rugged naturalist designs of George Nakashima furniture can choose from an amazing 36 lots in the Rago sale. This Minguren II coffee table is the leading Nakashima lot of the day, made from American black walnut in 1973. It features an exceptionally large single slab crotch-wood top with three free edges and expressive figured grain. The piece is signed with client name Kislevitz to the underside. Sold with a digital copy of the original order card, the table is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

PARIS — George Nakashima furniture was the big winner in the three-sale, intra-day event at Piasa November 8. The day consisted of After Alexander Calder 53/100, Arts and Crafts – Made in America, and American Design. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

At just 15 lots, After Alexander Calder was a micro-sale entirely comprised of Calder tapestries, each numbered 53/100. The top earner was Doll – no. 53/100, which hammered at €62,000 ($87,427 with buyer’s premium).

The Arts and Crafts – Made in America sale was a 34-lot affair packed with fine examples of the early 20th-century design movement, split between the various Stickley brothers and Charles Limbert (1854-1923). Top-lot honors went to Limbert for his no. 243 oak bench dating to 1902. It hammered for €7,000 ($9,870 with buyer’s premium).

The third session, the 148-lot American Design sale, was dominated by 28 lots of George Nakashima furniture. The leader of the sale was a Minguren II dining table bearing the magical modifier “Special Order” — in this case, for a couple in Illinois in 1982. It hammered at €145,000 ($204,446 with buyer’s premium), just south of its top estimate.

Other victorious lots included a double chest of drawers (€38,000, or $53,584 with buyer’s premium) and a walnut and pandanus Special Order cabinet from 1958, accompanied by its original order slip (€35,000, or $49,354 with buyer’s premium).

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Five unique Polaroid test shots and the Hasselblad camera from Dick Zimmerman’s photo shoot for Michael Jackson’s Thriller LP are the star lots at Blackwell Auctions on Saturday, December 9. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

“The auction would have been outstanding even without the celebrity items, but then the unexpected treasures started arriving just before the consignment cutoff. That suddenly took the auction lineup to the next level,” said Edwin Bailey of Blackwell Auctions.

The Michael Jackson items will all be auctioned individually, and the Polaroid images come with a Dick Zimmerman LOA and photographer’s release conveying ownership of the test photo’s copyright to the winning bidder (note that no personality rights are conveyed). The top lot is the shot that would become the design for the final cover, estimated at $10,000-$20,000.

Zimmerman’s Hasselblad 500ELX camera, which he used during the 1982 Thriller photo shoot, comes with an LOA from Zimmerman and is estimated at $10,000-$20,000 also.

The Green Berets by Robin Moore, himself a retired member of the elite force, served as a powerful metaphor for the American military during the Vietnam Era. A galley proof of the unpublished book was sent by Moore to John Wayne (1907-1979), who was immediately moved to purchase the film rights. Wayne’s granddaughter Anita Swift has consigned this piece of Duke history with an estimate of $4,000-$8,000.

Peter Max (b. 1937-) appears in the sale with a 2011 mixed media on paper titled 9/11 Tenth Anniversary. Max’s respectful depiction of the New York City skyline includes the Twin Towers and, in the foreground, the Pentagon. Measuring 22½ by 30in, it is signed and personally inscribed on the verso, and is estimated at $3,000-$6,000.

A selection of George Nakashima New chairs has been apportioned into three consecutive auction lots. Two lots (Lot 5, Lot 6) include a pair of dining armchairs estimated at $4,000-$8,000, while a third lot contains four dining side chairs together estimated at $6,000-$12,000. All are signed Nakashima and dated Sept. 27, 1986 beneath the seat.

PARIS — A breathtaking collection of 27 George Nakashima originals — including numerous special orders — takes center stage at Piasa’s American Design sale, scheduled for Wednesday, November 8. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Respected globally, George Nakashima (1905-1990) was an American woodworker, architect, and furniture maker regarded as a leader in the American craft movement. Though his family continues to run his business, examples created during George’s lifetime command the highest prices in the aftermarket — particularly special orders from customers, which can vary from the standard Nakashima designs.

Created two years before Nakashima’s passing is a 1988 special-order Minguren II dining table in walnut. Inscribed Thomas beneath the tabletop, the 80in-long table is the top overall lot in the sale and is estimated at €120,000-€150,000 ($126,835-$158,543).

In keeping with the American Design theme, Piasa has included four Harry Bertoia designs spanning a few areas of art he explored during his lifetime. The sale includes two items from the Bush series, metallic sculptures designed to resemble flora. This item, described as a “unique piece,” dates to 1972 and is made of bronze and copper. It is estimated at €70,000-€90,000 ($73,986-$95,125).

Philip Lloyd Powell (1919-2008) spent most of his career in relative obscurity, fashioning beautiful furniture prized by collectors today, though he never had any formal training. This 8ft-long dining table carries all the Powell hallmarks, including flowing design and stunning materials (in this case, walnut and slate). It is estimated at €40,000-€60,000 ($42,278-$63,417).

A beautiful wall mirror from Wendell Castle (1932-2018) is another marquee lot. With sculpted walnut made using Castle’s stacked lamination technique (numerous layers of wood bonded together, then fashioned into the final design), the piece is estimated at €25,000-€35,000 ($26,423-$36,993).

Piasa has two additional sales slated for the same date — November 8 — also in Paris.

They include After Alexander Calder – 53/100, a 15-lot micro-sale with works inspired by the look of Calder. All lots are estimated at €15,000-€20,000 ($15,888-$21,185).

The other is Arts and Crafts – Made in America, a sale featuring furniture by Gustav Stickley, the Stickley Brothers and Charles P. Limbert, with 34 lots in all.

PARIS — Three of the 20th century’s most respected — and collected — designers are featured in Piasa’s Art + Design auction on Wednesday, September 20. The 155-lot catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The top lot in the sale comes from the creative genius of Harry Bertoia (1915-1978). His Willow Sculpture from 1968 is made from stainless steel and was created as a commission by the First National Bank of Seattle. The lot comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Harry Bertoia Foundation and is estimated at €50,000-€70,000 ($54,000-$75,600).

Best known for his architecture throughout America, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was “focused on the complete integration of the house — site and structure, interior and exterior, furniture, ornament and architecture, every element of the design was connected,” according to his namesake trust’s website.

Piasa’s sale has six Wright items, topped by the Price Tower console, estimated at €35,000-€45,000 ($37,800-$48,600). Wright’s Day Bed is another example of his fine eye for design, estimated at €15,000-€20,000 ($16,200-$21,600).

George Nakashima (1905-1990) was a visionary furniture designer whose ethic was a reaction to the modernism trend of the postwar period. The auction has five Nakashima lots, including a special-order cherry wood Trestle dining table from 1977. It carries an estimate of €30,000-€40,000 ($32,400-$43,200).

Explore the quality and depth of Piasa’s sale now at LiveAuctioneers.
