HUDSON, N.Y. – Spotted in a regular Thursday Morning at Stair sale, a trio of French Empire gilt bronzes by Martin-Guillaume Biennais, Napoleon’s goldsmith, sold far above expectations on January 15. After just six bids, they hammered for $40,000 ($51,200 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $800-$1,200.

Stair Galleries’ cataloging was brief but, as indicted by the engraved signatures to the bases reading Biennais Orfre de LL. MM. Imp. et Roi a Paris (Biennais, goldsmith to their Imperial and Royal Majesties in Paris), these were made in the workshop of the Imperial goldsmith and bronzier Martin-Guillaume Biennais (1764-1843). He took advantage of the abolition of the guild system during the Revolution to build a business ‘at the sign of the Singe Violet’ in Paris that at its Napoleonic peak employed some 200 craftsmen making luxury goods of all kinds.

Although offered as a garniture, the models are part of set of 28 different ormolu busts known as the Napoleonides. Made circa 1808-1810, each features a different member of the Napoleonic family raised on a crested square section or cylindrical plinth. They may have been made as diplomatic gifts and distributed in the territories where Napoleon – the ultimate nepotist – had given his family positions of great power.

The two persons depicted here are Napoleon himself (seen to the right) and his youngest brother Jerome Bonaparte (1784-1860), king of Westphalia from 1807 to 1813, whose head and shoulders top both the plinth to the left and the clock case.

Busts from the Biennais Napoleonides series make occasional saleroom appearances, most frequently in France, where they can sell for upwards of €10,000 (about $10,500) depending on subject matter. Some of the models are known in only small numbers. Only six depictions of Caroline Bonaparte, queen of Naples, are recorded, one of which sold at Ivoire in Paris in January 2022 for €40,000 (about $43,500).

The 12in (30cm) clock case, with movement by Henri Fort of Paris, is particularly scarce. No other examples have been offered in recent memory, although another with the bust of Pauline Bonaparte, Princess Borghese, is in the collection of the Fondation Napoléon in Paris.

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Milestone Auctions marked a major milestone of its own with its New Years Antique Toy Extravaganza on January 13, selling nearly $1.3 million across 723 lots and notching its first million-plus toy sale. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

“In our ten-year history we’ve had other million-dollar-plus auctions, but this was our first auction solely devoted to toys that crossed into the seven-figure zone,” said Milestone co-owner Miles King.

The auction’s top lot was a dark horse: an all-original and complete Exelo (Japan) battery-operated ‘Mars’ Explorer space car that had been estimated at a very respectable $12,000-$15,000, but ended up blazing a Red Planet trail to $36,000 ($42,120 with buyer’s premium).

As predicted, the highest-selling robot in the sale was a 10in Yonezawa (Japan) windup Diamond Planet Robot, a very rare variation of the largest tin robot ever made, with a silvery-blue body and red arms and ears. All-original and complete with its distinctive googly eyes, an ‘oxygen meter’ [on its chest], and a large windup key, it hammered for $28,000 and sold for $34,440 with buyer’s premium. “Only a few Diamond Planets in this color variation have ever come to market. We knew there would be competition,” King said.

A parade of Japanese toy motorcycles was led by a 12in red version of I. Y. Japan’s tin bike known by the name “Friendly.” A beautiful presentation with a male driver and a female passenger, it was complete and in correct working order, including its ability to emit a motor noise. Three months earlier, Milestone had sold a different example of the same design, also in very nice condition, for $10,000. For the bike entered in the January 13 sale, Milestone assigned a conservative estimate of $3,000-$5,000. Rarity and condition once again attracted collectors, and it rose to $16,500 ($19,305 with buyer’s premium).

There was tremendous overseas interest in prewar Japanese toys, especially the lithographed-tin windup motorcycles. Two of the leading entries were cataloged with individual estimates of $2,000-$3,000, but as time would tell, there was much more upside yet to achieve. One of the bikes was a ‘Gun-Yo’ military trike motorcycle, 10½in long, fastidiously detailed and with a Japanese soldier driver kitted out with a gun and a dagger. The other bike, a ‘Welby’ trike motorcycle, exhibited a beautiful color palette and fine detailing, even down to the speckled pattern on the civilian rider’s shirt. Both sold for nearly five times the high estimate, settling at $12,000 ($14,040 with buyer’s premium).

WILTON, Conn. – Three hand-written documents by President Ronald Reagan, a lock of President Abraham Lincoln’s hair taken by his embalmer post-mortem, and signed models of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the crews of those missions were all top performers at University Archives January 10. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Reagan’s White House secretary Helene von Damm (b. 1938-) continues to empty her collection of hand-written and -annotated Reagan artifacts and send them to auction. Reagan’s “Win One for the Gipper” speech from 1981 hammered for an astounding $50,000 ($64,000 with buyer’s premium) against estimates of $15,000-$24,000. His “Welcome Home” speech delivered to returned State Department employees held hostage in Iran brought $20,000 ($25,600 with buyer’s premium), nearly doubling the high estimate. And a draft of letters to Frank Sinatra and financier Felix G. Rohatyn also nearly doubled its top estimate, hammering for $11,000 ($14,080 with buyer’s premium).

This lock of President Abraham Lincoln’s hair, collected after his death by his embalmer Harry Pratt Cattell, along with Lincoln’s clipped signature, were placed in a red velvet case specially designed for the artifacts. Included is an 1869 letter from Cattell establishing the authenticity of the hair. Estimated at $10,000-$15,000, the lot hammered for $25,000 ($32,000 with buyer’s premium).

Two scale models of the atomic bombs dropped on Imperial Japan to end the fighting in the Pacific Theater during World War II both sold well above estimate. Each model was autographed by the crew of each aircraft. Fat Man, the bomb dropped by the Army Air Force B-29 Superfortress Bockscar on Nagasaki, sold for $5,000 ($6,400 with buyer’s premium). Little Boy was the name for the bomb dropped on Hiroshima by the USAAF’s B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay. Its signed scale model doubled its high estimate, hammering for $3,000 ($3,840 with buyer’s premium).

RMS Titanic artifacts are exceedingly rare due to the difficulty of reaching the final resting place of the ruined vessel. This scale model of the ill-fated ocean liner is accompanied by a lump of coal retrieved from the site of the wreck, along with three signatures of the youngest Titanic survivor, Millvina Dean (1912-2009). Just nine weeks old, Dean was lowered into Lifeboat 10 and sailed into history. The complete lot brought $2,200 ($2,816 with buyer’s premium) against a modest estimate of just $500-$600.

MONROVIA, Calif. – The next Made in Mexico Online event returns to John Moran Auctioneers on Wednesday, February 7 with more than 270 lots of Mexican-made or -inspired fine art, silver, and jewelry, including a large selection of William Spratling items sure to entice collectors. The complete catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

William Spratling (1900-1967) is today considered the ‘father of Mexican silver,’ and for good reason. In 1931, Spratling moved from his home in the United States to live full-time in Taxco, Mexico, with the intent of establishing a thriving silver industry adjoining nearby silver mines. The Spaniards had ramped up silver mining production after their conquest of the Aztecs, but by the 20th century, no real artisan craft industry existed. Spratling industrialized what had previously been considered a hand-crafted industry, and in so doing, created the modern Mexican silver jewelry industry as we know it today.

Moran’s sale includes 32 Spratling lots, and the one with the highest estimate is a spectacular cuff made from silver and rosewood. It dates to the transitional 1944-1946 period, when Spratling sold his firm to an American investor who would ultimately send the thriving business into bankruptcy. The cuff is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

The sale’s top-estimated lot is a circa-1940s sterling silver coffee and tea service consisting of six pieces and a serving platter. Marked R. J. / Sterling / 925 / Hecho en Mexico, the complete set weighs in at approximately 336.6 oz. troy. It is estimated at $6,000-$9,000.

Originally an apprentice to William Spratling, Antonio Pineda (1919-2009) was one of the first to branch out from Spratling’s Taxco works and into his own, thereby creating the next generation of Mexican silver jewelry. Moran has 16 Pineda lots, lead by a three-piece jewelry set that is apparently difficult to date – the lot notes give its numbers as ‘circa 1953-1979, Taxco, Mexico’. With a necklace and two matching earrings, the lot has an estimate of $1,000-$1,500.

Legendary folk art dealer Fred Davis (1877-1961) had many American artists visit his vacation home in Cuernevaca, where they would produce paintings or take photographs that remain highly valuable to today’s collecting community. Aaron Kilpatrick (1872-1953) was a Canadian American painter of landscapes who created Across the Barranca during a 1925 visit to Davis. NEW YORK — Before René Lalique (1860-1945) made his first vessel for noted perfumer Francois Coty in 1907, perfume bottles were commercially produced things to store perfume in, which were typically thrown away after the perfume was used up. In the innovative glassmaker’s hands, however, these receptacles became works of art and gained their own name: flacons, a term describing small decorative bottles that have a stopper or cap. Today, their value lies not in their contents (most collectible bottles are displayed empty, regardless), but in their design.

Lalique and Coty’s work on that first perfume bottle was a game changer. “Their collaboration revolutionized the perfume industry: never before had fragrance bottles been so desirable, so collectible, in their own right. Many were numbered and signed – and fetch heart-stopping prices at auction today,” according to the Perfume Society’s website. Lalique and perfume bottles became synonymous, and by the 1930s, most of Europe’s perfumers were calling on Lalique to create bottles for their fragrances.

“There is an automatic mystique that comes to mind with the name Lalique. One pictures a frosty acid-finished bottle of unusual form and delicate presentation,” said Ken Leach of Perfume Bottles Auction of New York City. “Following his legendary success at the Paris Exposition of 1900, the Lalique name has been recognized worldwide — synonymous with artistry, imagination, technical execution, and luxury.”

Many of the most desirable Lalique perfume bottles are the early ones, especially those designed by René Lalique himself or clearly made under his guidance. Lalique is known to have collaborated with other glass artists such as Andre Jollivet and Lucien Gaillard, “but I’m certain that he had first and last say on every design issued,” Leach noted. “The earliest experimental bottles by his hand have sold in the six figures, and those of his own inventive molding techniques, dating to 1900 to 1920, typically command higher prices than later models. Results vary depending on if something is rarely seen, or [if] one in complete and untouched condition would appear.”

A standout is a 1912 René Lalique Oreilles Epines perfume bottle that attained $70,000 plus the buyer’s premium in April 2022 at Perfume Bottles Auction. After designing bottles for the perfume industry between 1908 and 1910, Lalique began to design vanity items for his own firm, including perfume bottles. Several were like this one, which had ‘ears,’ or handles, extending from the sides of the main perfume chamber. While Lalique moved to Paris at age two, he was born in Ay in northeastern France and often summered there, instilling in him an appreciation for the natural world. His interest can be seen in his Art Nouveau designs, as embodied by this bottle.

“The bottle ‘Oreilles epines (Ears with thorns)’ is one of three designs Lalique created in 1912 featuring a unique shape and a molding process of Lalique’s invention, where the conical body was cast with solid protruding handles, or ‘ears’, impressed with entwined thorns, and a separately molded base fused in reheating,” Leach said, adding, “A colored patina was applied to the thorn pattern on the stopper and bottle to accentuate the design.” The brown patina of the thickly molded glass used in this bottle, letting light shine into certain areas, also adds to its naturalistic look and gives it a three-dimensional quality. “Very few of this model are known to exist, which led to a well deserved result,” he said. “This bottle had remained in the same family since it was newly purchased, and it was featured in an episode of Antiques Roadshow.”

Lalique’s interest in natural themes shaped much of his work. “His earliest glass designs incorporate a combined fantasy of classical imagery, mermaids, fairies, foliage, and fauna,” Leach said. “As his contemporaries moved on from the sinuous Art Nouveau style to the static Art Deco, Lalique often clung to his mythical and organically inspired motifs into the 1940s.”

Evocative of the Art Nouveau era is a circa-1912 clear and frosted glass Fougère (Ferns) perfume bottle that brought $18,000 plus the buyer’s premium in January 2023 at Heritage Auctions. Ferns and naturalistic decoration festoon the perfume chamber, and the medallions on each side depict an attractive young woman.

Another Lalique bottle sporting ‘ears’, as does the aforementioned Oreilles Epines flacon, is a Perroquets (Parrots) glass perfume bottle that made £15,000 ($19,070) plus the buyer’s premium in July 2021 at Kinghams Auctioneers. It was designed around 1919 and has a stopper in a fan form. Black stain on the ears enhances and reveals the parrots. According to the auctioneer’s notes, no other example in this design is known.

Also having an Art Deco feel is a circa 1920s-1930s Trois Groupes De Deux Danseuses perfume bottle, which brought $47,500 plus the buyer’s premium at Akiba Galleries in April 2022. It features relief decoration of dancing nude women.

Lalique proved himself a master glassmaker with clever designs such as his 1924 flacon for Isabay’s fragrance A Travers La Voilette, which translates to ‘through the veil.’ This bottle made $15,000 plus the buyer’s premium in May 2021 at Perfume Bottles Auction and features clear glass hand-painted on the shoulder and a darker hue near the base. The veil pattern was repeated in the accompanying box.

The presence of a Lalique perfume bottle’s original box can enhance the lot, as seen with a 1928 flacon for Canarina Les Yeux Bleus (The Blue Eyes) in blue glass, which was graced with Egyptian-style decoration. The bottle and its embossed paper box made $5,000 plus the buyer’s premium in April 2022 at Perfume Bottles Auction.

Interest in all things Lalique has long been healthy and pronounced, but perfume bottles tend to appeal to a broad audience. “Over my 60-plus years of watching the antiques market cycle through highs and lows, trends and fads, the consistent interest in vintage Lalique glass objects took a turn in the late 1970s from a mostly English and American male-dominated collecting focus of vases and hood ornaments to include a new interest in perfume bottles,” Leach said. “Prices rose significantly as women and Asian collectors stepped into the auction arena.”

Building a Lalique perfume bottle collection is a possibility for every taste and budget. The factory produced bottles for at least 60 perfume companies, some in limited editions and some in massive quantities. “Because of the great variety of choice, prices can range from literally $20 for the beginner to over $100,000 for the sophisticate,” Leach said. “Lalique bottles were so beautifully designed that often they have been kept empty on display all these years.”
