Audie Murphy’s Colt revolver is one of many firearm stars at Milestone March 23-24

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Milestone‘s Premier Firearms two-day sale on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 features 1,174 weapons from World War II, the Civil War, and the rough-and-tumble era when Texas Rangers chased bank robbers on horseback. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Day One’s top lot is a Colt .45 long cartridge single-action Army revolver that was owned by World War II hero Audie Murphy. The son of Texas sharecroppers, Murphy tried unsuccessfully to join the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, but was rejected for being underweight. Eventually, he was accepted into the Army when he was barely 17 years old. Not only did he go on to become the most decorated combat soldier of the Second World War but also one of the most highly decorated soldiers in U.S. history. At age 19, he received the Congressional Medal of Honor for singlehandedly holding off a company of German soldiers at the Colmar Pocket in France, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. He would later star in many Hollywood Westerns. Murphy’s Colt revolver is one of only 244 such guns assembled in 1947-1948 under the direct supervision of Harry St. John, whose personal stamp F appears at the rear of the trigger guard. The gun was shipped in 1958 to Murphy’s home address. It comes to auction together with a 1989 Colt archival letter signed by Colt Historian Emeritus M. S. Huber, and carries a $50,000-$100,000 estimate.

This 1908 single-action Army revolver is highly prized for its gorgeous overall artistry by Colt Master Engraver Cuno A. Helfricht. It features steer-head relief-carved grips with silver pony medallions and gold-plating on the cylinder, hammer, trigger guard, and backstrap. All of these significant details are confirmed by a Colt archival letter signed by Colt Historian Emeritus M. S. Huber, which accompanies the firearm. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Perhaps no other firearm in the sale witnessed as much action as the 1912 Colt .41 caliber double-action Army Special revolver that belonged to legendary Texas Ranger Captain Manuel T. ‘Lone Wolf’ Gonzaullas (1891-1977), who is enshrined in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. Formerly a Mexican Army major and U.S. Treasury Department special agent, Spanish-born Gonzaullas became a Ranger in 1920. He was as tough as they come, enforcing the law in Texas oilfields and boomtowns and all along the Texas-Mexico border. The Colt’s backstrap was engraved – likely at the Colt factory – with Gonzaullas’ name and the words TEXAS RANGER. It is estimated at $7,500-$15,000.

Many Confederate States of America army members had to supply their own firearms. Lieutenant A. S. Matteson of Arkansas chose an English Tranter .44-caliber double-action revolver made circa 1856-1857. The cap-and-ball revolver has markings that appear to say Wilkerson London and Thomas Griswold & Co. New Orleans. The piece is accompanied by an actual antique photo of Matteson, and is estimated at $25,000-$35,000.

A 1944 Rolex gold watch ordered by an American POW and actually delivered to him at the stalag where he was imprisoned is estimated at $7,500-$15,000. Rolex serial number 309040 was factory-shipped from Rolex in Switzerland to B-25 bombardier 2nd Lt. Benjamin Elms at Stalag Luft 3, where he was allowed to keep and wear the watch his father in Texas had paid for. Interestingly, Elms and fellow inmates would later inspire the hit 1960s TV series Hogan’s Heroes. The watch is in running order and is accompanied by extensive original Rolex documentation confirming shipment to the stalag in Hammelburg, Germany, including a receipt actually stamped by the stalag. A remarkable and historically important timepiece, it is estimated at $7,500-$15,000.

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Milestone Auctions marked a major milestone of its own with its New Years Antique Toy Extravaganza on January 13, selling nearly $1.3 million across 723 lots and notching its first million-plus toy sale. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

“In our ten-year history we’ve had other million-dollar-plus auctions, but this was our first auction solely devoted to toys that crossed into the seven-figure zone,” said Milestone co-owner Miles King.

The auction’s top lot was a dark horse: an all-original and complete Exelo (Japan) battery-operated ‘Mars’ Explorer space car that had been estimated at a very respectable $12,000-$15,000, but ended up blazing a Red Planet trail to $36,000 ($42,120 with buyer’s premium).

As predicted, the highest-selling robot in the sale was a 10in Yonezawa (Japan) windup Diamond Planet Robot, a very rare variation of the largest tin robot ever made, with a silvery-blue body and red arms and ears. All-original and complete with its distinctive googly eyes, an ‘oxygen meter’ [on its chest], and a large windup key, it hammered for $28,000 and sold for $34,440 with buyer’s premium. “Only a few Diamond Planets in this color variation have ever come to market. We knew there would be competition,” King said.

A parade of Japanese toy motorcycles was led by a 12in red version of I. Y. Japan’s tin bike known by the name “Friendly.” A beautiful presentation with a male driver and a female passenger, it was complete and in correct working order, including its ability to emit a motor noise. Three months earlier, Milestone had sold a different example of the same design, also in very nice condition, for $10,000. For the bike entered in the January 13 sale, Milestone assigned a conservative estimate of $3,000-$5,000. Rarity and condition once again attracted collectors, and it rose to $16,500 ($19,305 with buyer’s premium).

There was tremendous overseas interest in prewar Japanese toys, especially the lithographed-tin windup motorcycles. Two of the leading entries were cataloged with individual estimates of $2,000-$3,000, but as time would tell, there was much more upside yet to achieve. One of the bikes was a ‘Gun-Yo’ military trike motorcycle, 10½in long, fastidiously detailed and with a Japanese soldier driver kitted out with a gun and a dagger. The other bike, a ‘Welby’ trike motorcycle, exhibited a beautiful color palette and fine detailing, even down to the speckled pattern on the civilian rider’s shirt. Both sold for nearly five times the high estimate, settling at $12,000 ($14,040 with buyer’s premium).

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – An amazing selection of pre- and postwar toys from around the world is on tap with Milestone Auctions‘ New Year’s Antique Toy Extravaganza on Saturday, January 13. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The 732-lot sale includes some of the most sought-after European, American and Japanese playthings from the golden era through the postwar production years. Highlights include a super-rare boxed Linemar Mechanical Popeye & Olive Oyl tank, a stellar Diamond Planet Robot, and a Marx Big Loo robot prototype with impeccable documentation and provenance from its original designer.

“We feel very fortunate to have so many incredible toys from advanced collections in one sale. Many are high-end, museum-quality pieces. Also, there are some unusual buying opportunities in the mix, like the rare variations and prototypes, which toy buyers always respond to very favorably,” Milestone’s co-owner Miles King said.

The toy hobby is still buzzing about the boxed Popeye & Olive Oyl tank that set a world auction record on April 9, 2022 when Milestone sold it for $105,000. One of perhaps a half-dozen examples known to exist, the toy had emerged from Australia, a fact that became widely known after the sale. Contrary to the old adage, lightning did strike twice in the same spot. Worldwide postsale coverage led to the discovery of yet another boxed Popeye tank in Australia from a different, completely unrelated source.

John Elsbury of Western Australia received the tank in 1957 as a seventh-birthday gift from his parents. He clearly remembers being instructed by his mother to sit outside Randall & Edwards jewelry store in downtown Kalgoorlie while the secretive purchase was being made. Sixty-five years later, after stumbling across an online article about the $105,000 price paid for a similar-looking tank, Elsbury starting digging and eventually located his toy, still in its original Linemar packaging with a two-shilling price tag. Elsbury contacted Milestone, and arrangements were made for the tank’s shipment to Ohio. It has an estimate of $40,000-$60,000.

Yonezawa’s Batman tank, all-original and complete with its vinyl Batman driver, is one of the scarcest of all Batman toys. The bright red tin-friction vehicle is emblazoned with Japanese writing, bat logos and images of both Batman and Robin. It carries a $15,000-$25,000 estimate.

Variations are the stuff of collectors’ dreams. A fantastic Yonezawa Diamond Planet Robot is an especially uncommon variation, with a silvery-blue body and red arms and ears. “Any Diamond Planet Robot is like a Fabergé egg to robot collectors. It was made in two color variations – red body with blue arms and ears, and the even rarer blue body with red arms and ears, like the one in our auction. They simply do not turn up for sale anywhere,” said Miles King. “Only a few have ever come to market, so it’s sure to attract strong competition.” The Diamond Planet Robot is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

The word “prototype” is music to any toy collector’s ears. The sale includes the actual preproduction sample for Marx’s Big Loo Giant Moon Robot. Standing 38in tall, the unpainted silver Big Loo was acquired directly from the toy’s designer, Harry Evanoff, in 1963. It has production numbers on its back and retains a Marx sample tag that says ‘7650, Big Loo, Erie, Return to Harry E.’ The lot also includes archival letters from Louis Marx about production issues and returns, and other unique documents such as a test-sample letter and a timesheet showing hours spent on development. The godfather of all Big Loo robots has been assigned a $15,000-$25,000 estimate.

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Milestone Auctions rolled out 1,340 lots of historically important military, civilian and sporting guns at its November 18 and November 19 Fall Premier Firearms sale. The auction closed at a robust $1.9 million, inclusive of buyer’s premium. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Among the top-tier entries were many exquisite Colt rarities, such as the documented Colt 1847 Martial ‘Walker’ D Co., .44 caliber percussion revolver with the serial number 218. This model was developed through a collaboration between Samuel Colt and Texas Ranger Captain Samuel H. Walker, national hero of the Texas-Mexico Wars. Only 1,100 were made, and fewer than 100 are known to have survived. It sold within estimate for $70,000 ($81,900 with buyer’s premium).

Any serious Winchester collector would want to own an 1897 advertising display known as the ‘double W’ board. A recent discovery in all-original condition, the shell-packed advertisement is adorned with A. B. Frost vignettes and gold-overlay borders. Bidders sent it rocketing to $57,500 ($69,000 with buyer’s premium), just shy of its high estimate.

Boasting a Hollywood connection, a B. Searcy 500 Nitro Express double rifle was #4 of a four-gun set manufactured in 1995 and sold privately by the manufacturer. Two rifles from the auction set were used in the movie The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Rifle #4 had all-matching numbers and an action that was profusely engraved with scenes of dangerous game. Together with its felt-lined, partitioned luggage case, it sold for $27,000 ($31,590 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $20,000-$40,000.

A Russian contract Colt 1911 .45 caliber pistol, manufactured in 1916 and bearing factory-applied Cyrillic markings, was accompanied by a 2020 Colt factory letter signed and certified by historian Beverly Haynes. The document indicated that the firearm had been sent to the Russian government on 9/2/1916 in a shipment of 5,000. Pistols of its type are known to have had an extremely low survival rate, hence they are rarely encountered in the marketplace. It sold for $20,000 ($23,400 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

German World War II firearms secured very pleasing prices overall. A Walther World War II Party Leader PPK pistol in .65 ACP caliber displayed Party Leader brown plastic grips and a loaded chamber indicator. It was accompanied by an LOA hand-signed by the noted author and firearms expert James Rankin. The pistol realized $10,000 ($12,000 with buyer’s premium) against a $4,000-$6,000 estimate.

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — Japanese tin toys from the postwar period were the top earners at the first Elmer’s Toy Museum liquidation event at Milestone Auctions October 28. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

As documented in LiveAuctioneers News’ presale coverage, Elmer’s Auto & Toy Museum was a popular destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors from 1994 to 2002 in Fountain City, Wisconsin. After founder Elmer Duellman’s passing in 2019, his children elected to auction the collection with Milestone, bringing an amazing 20,000 lots to market during the next few years.

As predicted, the postwar Japanese tin performed best with collectors bidding live and through LiveAuctioneers and they sent some key toy motorcycle lots skyrocketing.

The sale’s top seller was the ‘large’ version of the I. Y. (Japan) Romance cycle, featuring a male and female rider atop a friction-drive bike with a single headlight (other, less valuable versions have a three-light array). It sold for $21,000 ($25,200 with buyer’s premium).

Marusan’s Indian tin-friction motorcycle features ‘authentic’ Indian-brand markings on both the bike and the rider, and it comes with a tough-to-find original box. Bidders on the floor and on LiveAuctioneers battled it out for the toy, which ultimately sold via LiveAuctioneers for $15,500 ($18,600 with buyer’s premium).

Tipp & Co. of Nuremberg checked in with its 12in wind-up motorcycle with sidecar. This time, the floor beat out internet bidders to win the toy at $11,000 ($13,200 with buyer’s premium).

Always a hit at auction is Yonezawa’s Atom Jet Racer, a monumental friction-drive space-themed vehicle toy that clocks in at an amazing 26in in length. The tail fin was a replacement, but that didn’t stop bidding from reaching $11,000 ($13,200 with buyer’s premium).

Postwar American brands made a showing with the highly anticipated new-in-box Tonka no. 210 Road Builders Set. The five-piece set with pristine original packaging ended up selling above estimate at $16,500 ($19,800 with buyer’s premium).

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — From 1994 until 2022, Elmer’s Auto and Toy Museum delighted untold thousands of visitors with acres of show barns filled with vintage toys, automotives, motorcycles, and so much more.

But all legends have a beginning and an end, and so too does Elmer’s. After his passing in 2019 at the age of 79, the children of Elmer Duellman have decided to return the collection back to the market, with more than 20,000 pieces to be sold in a series of events beginning Saturday, October 28 at Milestone Auctions.

“It’s impossible to describe how comprehensive Elmer’s collection is. He had a head start on all of us,” said Miles King, co-owner of Milestone Auctions. “As far back as the 1980s, Elmer was buying and selling at a rapid pace and had a small army of pickers from coast to coast who were always on the lookout for items of interest.”

Milestone has rolled out key pieces for the first of the Elmer Duellman auctions. A Buddy L truck made exclusively for International Harvester dealers was produced in very low numbers. The example in the sale is in excellent condition and has an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Described as possibly the nicest of all the surviving sets of its type is a Tonka #210 Road Builders set in new-old stock condition. The six-piece set is estimated at $6,000-$10,000.

Duellman’s collection includes a large number of Japanese tin-lithographed toys from the postwar period. An Alps Lincoln Futura in excellent condition with its original box carries an estimate of $2,500-$3,500.

Pure Oil was founded in 1914 and continues today as a dealer cooperative in the southern United States. Likely created as a promotional item for dealers, this Metalcraft battery-powered airmail aircraft toy decorated for Pure Oil is completely original, has retained its box, and is rated by Milestone’s experts as the nicest example they have seen. It is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

British-made Civil War rifle led the charge at Milestone’s $1.8M Premier Firearms Auction

Parker Field & Sons (London) 39in, .577 caliber Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle manufactured circa 1861 under commission to the Confederacy. Number on butt plate and loading rod indicates it was among the first 10,000 rifles the gunsmiths delivered to the buyer across the Atlantic. Fresh to the market, it sold for $15,600 against an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.
