DALLAS — Michel Haillard (b. 1959-) is a French designer of exotic furniture, much of it incorporating found items along with animal-sourced pelts, hides, horns, and bones. The results are highly polarizing yet also highly prized among his adherents. Three key examples of Haillard’s trademark approach to furniture design are included in Heritage Auctions‘ The Curated Home sale slated for Friday, February 23. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

First up is an armchair fashioned from the hide of a crocodile, with hand-carved miniature crocs radiating spire-like from the perimeter of the chairback. Two sets of horns from unidentified animals intertwine and rise from the chair’s forearms, creating a throne-like appearance. The entire affair is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Another armchair fit for an animal kingdom regent includes hand-tooled leather with a grand back framed by two animal horns. Seating is provided by way of overstuffing, then layering on a full big-cat pelt. Two more horns provided a turn-down to the forearms of the chair. The presentation is, as with all Haillard pieces, completely unique. It carries an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

The final Haillard piece must be seen to be believed. While technically an armchair, it almost defies description. The piece incorporates a crocodile hide, animal horns, and what appear to be young moose antlers for a one-of-a-kind presentation. As with the other two Haillard items in the sale, it is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

GLEN COVE, N.Y. — The opening lots in the Modern, Post-War & Contemporary Auction at Roland NY on Tuesday, February 20 come from the ‘collection’ of notorious art dealer Ezra Chowaiki. He was convicted of wire fraud in 2018 and served 18 months in prison for an investment scam in which he sold stakes in art he didn’t actually own.

Chowaiki’s Park Avenue gallery was later declared bankrupt, with these 50 lots being sold on behalf of liquidators.

While unlikely to generate sufficient funds to pay back the millions Chowaiki’s took from his victims, they include glimpses of a former life as an influential New York dealer in the modern and contemporary sphere. He was described at the time as ‘the ultimate art world insider.’

Three stacked ‘ceramic forest’ sculptures by the Spanish artist Jaime Hayon (b. 1974-) that carry estimates of $7,500-$10,000 each were previously featured at the Miami Art Basel fair in 2003. One, in blue and white enamels, stands 6ft 8in high, while the other, a pair in yellow and black, is 5ft 4in.

A colorful book-covered painted fiberglass cow sculpture by the British artist (and granddaughter of Winston Churchill) Edwina Sandys (b. 1938-) is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. It was one of many created for Cow Parade 2000, the second of the public art events held that year in New York City.

A vintage Sunday B. Morning screenprint of Andy Warhol’s Cream of Mushroom Soup Can, signed to the verso and numbered 33/250, has an estimate $1,500-$2,500, while a Robert Lazzarini resin, bone, and pigment sculpture of an amorphic skull, reminiscent of that in Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors, is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

Art from other estates includes one of the tapestries created late in his career by Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and woven in Guatemala. Modern Tapestry, number 96 from an edition of 100 and signed and dated in the weave 1975, is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

LONE JACK, Mo. — An amazing collection of 11 works by Swedish American landscape master Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) provides the focus of Soulis Auctions‘ Winter Fine Art sale on Saturday, February 24. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A native of Sweden, Sandzen received a position at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas in 1894, where he would spend the next 52 years teaching art. During that time, he amassed a highly respected and valuable body of work that performs well with contemporary collectors. The sale’s top-estimated lots are both Sandzen oils. Scene from Rocky Mountain National Park dates to 1936 and demonstrates the artist’s knack for capturing the reflectiveness of water, while Study from the Rocky Mountain National Park is from 1922 and from what is known as Sandzen’s ‘middle period’, in which his technique was to use ‘short, singular, confident strokes’ to his brushwork. Both paintings are estimated at $40,000-$50,000.

The sale includes a number of signed Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) lithographs issued in the 1940s and 1950s by Associated American Artists. Chief among them is a 1955 lithograph titled Running Horses. In the stylized image, a trio of horses keep pace with a steam locomotive passing by in the background. It carries an estimate of $6,000-$9,000.

Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) is a French sculptor who also produced limited editions in bronze. This 1902 example in dark green-brown patination is Le Petite Mediterranee or La Mediterranee, etude. It bears the foundry mark Alexis Rudier, Fondeur, Paris and has the artist’s interlaced AM monogram. The piece is currently in France for authentication. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

VAN NUYS, Calif. — Luis Jiminez (1940-2006) specialized in sculptures made of fiberglass, giving him the freedom to create and decorate his designs with great flexibility. In 1994, Jiminez won a contract from Denver International Airport to create a sculpture to stand at the motorway entrance to the facility. Having previously rejected a concept for a stampede of buffalo, DIA instead felt a horse — perhaps in homage to the mascot of the Denver Broncos NFL team — might be more appropriate.

Jiminez had created sculptures of horses, but his plan for DIA was a tour de force: a 32-foot tall sculpture of a mustang rearing up on his hind legs, painted blue and with illuminated eyes. He called it Blue Mustang, and he worked tirelessly on it for 12 years — a bit longer than DIA had anticipated, resulting in a lawsuit demanding the return of the initial payment to Jiminez. Mediation after Jiminez countersued determined that the artist should simply complete the work.

Prior to completion, Jiminez was lifting elements of the horse sculpture with a crane in his New Mexico studio. Tragedy struck when one of the three main sections fell and pinned the artist against a steel beam, severing an artery in his leg and leading to his death.

The sculpture that killed its artist was finally installed at DIA in 2008, two years after Jiminez’s demise. Locals began referring to it as ‘Blucifer’ in an ominous reference to it having literally killed its creator.

In 1992, Jiminez created a series of 10 fiberglass rearing-horse sculptures standing 31.5in in height. While not an exact match for Blue Mustang, and predating the former by many years, the likeness is uncanny nonetheless. Los Angeles Modern Auctions brings number 6 from the series to market on Wednesday, February 21, with an estimate of $60,000-$80,000.

EDINBURGH, Scotland — An exceptionally rare first edition of an early feminist text sold for £16,000 ($26,485 with buyer’s premium) at Lyon & Turnbull’s Rare Books, Manuscripts, Maps & Photographs auction on February 7. In A Letter to the Women of England on the injustice of Mental Subordination published in 1799, Mary Robinson argues for the intellectual liberation of women: “is not woman a human being, gifted with all the feelings that inhabit the bosom of man?”

Robinson, later called ‘the English Sappho’, was all too familiar with the patriarchal constraints of her era. As an actress, she had caught the attention of the Prince of Wales, future George IV, and agreed to an offer of £20,000 to become his mistress. After spoiling her reputation and ending her career in the theater, he then refused to pay the promised amount.

In this first edition, she wrote under the pseudonym Anne Frances Randall. In the second edition, Robinson used her own name and placed an advertisement at the start revealing her identity. This, one of only five known first edition copies, was sold in its contemporary quarter calf (the front cover now detached) well above its £300-£500 ($375-$630) estimate.

A cache of material from the Stevenson family – designers across four generations of many of the U.K.’s lighthouses – provided the sale with a specialist focus. Robert Stevenson (1772-1850), the grandfather of Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson, built 19 lighthouses in an impressive career that began with the erection of the Little Cumbrae lighthouse in Ayrshire when he was just 19 years old. His masterpiece was the Bell Rock Lighthouse, constructed off the coast of Arbroath between 1807-10, which is the oldest working rock lighthouse in the United Kingdom.

Through 28 hand-drawn and colored illustrations, a manuscript titled Signals from the Bell Rock Lighthouse to the Arbroath Signal Tower demonstrates the workings of its communication system. The main methods of signaling were via colored flags and large copper balls that were raised to indicate all was well. It was estimated at £1,200-£1,800 ($1,515-$2,270) but sold at £5,500 ($9,095 with buyer’s premium).

As befitting a family of Scottish civil engineers, the works of architect Robert Adam were prominent in the Stevenson family library. A first edition of one of Adam’s most influential books, his 1764 Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia, including 61 numbered engraved plates, sold at £4,400 ($5,765 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £3,000-£5,000 ($3,785-$6,315).

Sold at £6,500 ($10,750 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £3,000-£5,000 ($3,785-$6,315) was a November 1566 second issue copy of The Actis and Constitutionnis of the Realme of Scotland, the first collected edition of all public Scottish acts of parliament since 1424. Commissioned by Mary Queen of Scots in a year of crisis, a first edition was printed in October 1566 with a second issue rushed out a month later with several pieces of anti-Protestant legislation removed.

The ‘Black Acts,’ as they became known on account of the gothic typeface, are remarkable for a reason unintended by the compilers. They contain the first printed references to golf and football in a succession of acts intended to prevent Scots from neglecting their military duties.

As indicated by various inscriptions, this copy was acquired in 1730 by by Alexander Boswell, a leading judge, later remembered by Sir Walter Scott as ‘an able lawyer, a good scholar, after the manner of Scotland, and … a strict presbyterian and whig of the old Scottish cast.’

A letter penned on September 28, 1589, by James VI of Scotland (the future James I of England) seeking news on the progress of his marriage to Anne of Denmark sold at £4,800 ($7,935 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £3,000-£5,000 ($3,785-$6,315). Letters entirely in James’s hand are very rare, with this one written in broad Scots to George Keith, the 4th Earl Marischal and the magnate charged with securing the Danish match. In its seven lines, he references ‘the contrairiousness of the windes’ — the recurrent storms preventing the embassy’s return to Scotland he would later become convinced were the work of a treasonous coven of witches.
