NORTHBROOK, Ill. – A collection of more than 400 pop art posters and other artworks will be auctioned by Universal Live on Thursday, July 15, commencing at 3 p.m. Central Time. The auction is being conducted on behalf Rare Posters Inc., and will feature Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com.

The auction features many signed items by top-caliber artists including Christo, Edwards, Cutrone, O’Keeffe and Le Corbusier. Additionally, the sale includes works by Warhol, Miro, Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, Butero, Fontana and many others.

Universal Live’s auctioneer, Martin Shape, believes pop art is seeing a revival.

“This generation is collecting the posters and art that was popular in the 1960s and ’70s.  It has a broad-based appeal that spans several generations,” Shape said. “In our sales we have many bidders from France, Spain, Germany and other European countries. I am sure that the current rate of exchange, which favors the euro against the weaker U.S. dollar, has much to do with the amount of bidding from overseas.”

Universal Live makes every effort to ensure the artworks in its sales are accessible to as many bidders as possible.

“More than 200 lots in this auction have a starting bid of $50 to $100,” Shape said. “It will be an excellent opportunity for bidders to enter the competition and vie for some great pop art.”

For additional information on any lot in the sale, call Martin Shape at 847-412-1802 or email sales@universallive.com.

Turning to the fine art category, both exceptional American and European artists will be represented. From Europe, a framed oil on canvas showing two riders hunting with several dogs by German artist Hugo Ungewitter (1869-1944) is expected to earn $10,000-$15,000. A portrait of Sir James Henry Attwood by Sir Henry Raeburn (British, 1756-1823) is estimated at $8,000-$10,000, as is the framed oil on canvas titled The Start by Edward Seago (British, 1910-1974). A framed etching by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) is titled Reflexion du peintre sur la vie and estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

Among works to be offered from American artists will be Turquoise Sea, a framed and signed oil on canvas by California painter Mary DeNeale Morgan (1868-1948). This work carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000. Another California artist of note, Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), will be represented by an oil painting with a stand of eucalyptus trees against a summer sky, which is expected to bring $4,000-$6,000. From New York, Roy Lichtenstein’s (1923-1997) framed color silkscreen Best Buddies comes to the block with the same estimate.

Clars’ July sale will feature the first installment in a series of eight sales that will offer one of the most extensive collections of American pottery ever to come to auction. For almost 40 years Naomi Murdach amassed what is likely the world’s largest collection of American-made pottery from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s. The collection has been featured in his famous – or perhaps “infamous” – shop in San Francisco. With pottery stocked from floor to ceiling in showcases, the store is a virtual museum with more than 15,000 pieces of Bauer alone, not to mention the 300 pieces of Pacific Pottery, and countless numbers of Roseville, Hall, Red Wing and Iroquois pieces. Coming up for sale at Clars’ July event will be several hundred of Naomi’s fine mid-century pieces including works by Newcomb College, Catalina Island, Roseville, Hall and Bauer. Items will be offered both individually and in groups.

In the decorative category, Americana will be represented by a selection of 19th-century duck decoys and an impressive American molded sheet copper weather vane, circa 1880.

International selections will be highlighted by a collection of African wood and bronze sculptures, pots and currency, a collection of Chinese decorative scholar’s items and a Japanese patinated bronze figural group by Hidemitsu.

Fine antique furniture, particularly of the 19th century, will include a Regency mahogany inlaid chest of drawers, an early country pine corner cabinet, and an elegant Continental dining-room suite with hand-painted table, seven chairs, china cabinet and a satinwood marble-top console table.

On the modern side, a Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller aluminum group slate table will no doubt see spirited bidding.

Clars’ July Fine Estate Auction will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific both Saturday and Sunday. A preview will be held Friday, July 9, from 1-6 p.m.

Clars Auction Gallery is located at 5644 Telegraph Ave.

Universal Live to offer Renoir lithographs in July 9 auction

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – A signed lithograph of his son by Pierre-August Renoir (French 1841-1919) is one of two Renoirs that will cross the block when Universal LiveAuctioneers hosts an online high-end fine art auction on Friday, July 9 at 3 p.m. Central Time. The sale will include 275 lots of original paintings, signed lithographs, sculptures and statues representing some of the best known names in the art world. Also to be offered is an extensive selection of antique and vintage posters.

Martin Shape, president of Universal Live, described the auction as, “far and away one of Universal’s most prestigious in its 15-year history of conducting thousands of auctions. Opening bids have been kept competitive, and there is the potential for outstanding value in this sale.”

Included in the inventory is a second Renoir signed lithograph, an oil on canvas by Alfred Manessier (French 1911-1993), five Peter Max renderings (one original), signed Warhols, a signed nude and others by Wessleman, and works by Rauschenburg, Jim Dine, Chagall, Miro and Dali; as well as Rockwell sculptures and Pescara statues.

Shape said he believes that less than 50 final full-color renderings of Renoir’s L’Enfant au Biscuit (Child with Biscuit) were produced in 1899. “Renoir outdid himself and produced what is unquestionably the artist’s finest print. The colors have a pastel tonality and a delightful matte finish. Many trials must have been made before Renoir was satisfied,” Shape said. “Some proofs exist of the drawing alone in grey-black; others have a light pink for the face. Unfinished versions were also produced in varying degrees of color. We know of only three final color stone lithographs, and this is one of those few.”

The other Renoir is Le petit garcon au porte-plume (Little Boy with Quill Pen). In it, Renoir skillfully used background shading in order to centralize the focus and the impact of his son within the composition. This intriguing portrait study of Renoir’s young son, Claude, is shown here, deep in childish thought, as he writes (or draws) with his quill pen. His gaze is that of a child’s. The overall portrait is a study in concentration, beautifully rendered with thoughtful lines and form.

Just as important is the Alfred Manessier original rare, early oil on canvas Sea. The scene portrays rough waters at sea, with seagulls catching the wind above. The artist also later worked in stained glass, and a hint of that can be seen in the pattern of the waves catching the light. His last work for auction was sold for $54,000 in 2007. Today, Manessier’s art is found in some of the world’s most prestigious private collections and museums.

Representing the pop art genre is one of the better-known artists, James Rizzi, with his artwork titled It’s Time to Buy a New TV. Rizzi captures the excitement of shopping for a new television in this fantastic three-dimensional artwork. It consists of many individual cut-out pieces that were pasted on the background at varying heights, making the vibrant scene really “pop out.” The artist deviated from his usual small renderings and produced a 26- by 36-inch image size. According to Shape it is rare to find a large Rizzi.
