STUDIO CITY, Calif. — More than 800 lots of theme park and studio animation artifacts from 100 years of Disney history return to Van Eaton Galleries in its first sale of 2024, slated for Saturday, March 2. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Mary Blair (1911-1978) was an early woman animation pioneer, working at MGM, Ub Iwerks, and ultimately Walt Disney Productions, where she served as a concept artist helping to capture the ‘right look’ for both animated features as well as the later theme park displays. Van Eaton has four of her original concept paintings, including the design for the It’s A Small World attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The acrylic on board measures 20 by 15in and is dated to 1965. It carries an estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

More than 70 original production animation cels are included in the sale. The top-estimated lot of this group is a matched set of Tramp and Lady from the memorable Bella Notte sequence of Walt Disney’s 1955 release Lady and the Tramp. Originally sold at the Art Corner in Disneyland, they have been trimmed and professionally restored and are together estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

First opened in 1969, Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion provides a chillingly fun experience from the moment the ride begins. This ‘stretching’ portrait is an original artwork painted by Disney Imagineer Marc Davis, where the first third is visible and the remainder reveals as the elevator descends to the ride cart platform below ground level. Highly prized by Disneyland collectors, this original is estimated at $100,000-$150,000.

Original audio-animatronic birds from Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room, which first opened in 1963, are exceedingly rare. This example has been restored to full operational order by Disney artisan Kevin Kidney, and it is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Production drawings are a great entry-level area for Disney collectors, and this sale has some from Disney’s earliest days. 1928’s Steamboat Willie was the animated short that transformed Disney from a small independent studio into the entertainment monolith it is today. This original production drawing from the short is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.
