Louisianans George Rodrigue and Jim Blanchard highlighted at Crescent City March 8-9

George Rodrigue , 'HO HO HO,' estimated at $800-$1,200 at Crescent City.

NEW ORLEANS — Crescent City Auction Gallery’s Important March Estates Auction runs Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, and includes lots as diverse as 19th-century Russian Orthodox Church icons and a Louis XV-style Art Nouveau bronze dore chandelier. However, it is the local talent that takes the spotlight at the two-day sale. The catalogs are now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

George Rodrigue (1944-2013) began painting in the 1960s and focused on local Louisiana landscapes and other historic Louisiana historical scenes and events. But when he found his ultimate muse in his Blue Dog, he catapulted to international fame and wealth. The sale includes seven silkscreen prints featuring the wide-eyed pup in various Christmas-themed designs, ranging in estimates as low as $500 and as high as $2,000.

Truly Rudy is the top-estimated Rodrigue lot at $1,000-$2,000. Like all the prints, it is signed by the artist and numbered, in this case, 43 of a 350-piece run. On the more affordable side is Sweet Like You, a screen print with numerous floating blue dog heads around Christmas candy canes and holly. It is estimated at $500-$900 and is numbered 104 of 150.

Jim Blanchard (b. 1955-) bills himself as an “architectural archival artist,” meaning his paintings are of buildings — Louisiana buildings in particular. John Kemp, writing in Louisiana Cultural Vistas, said, “[Blanchard] pursues his paintings with the mathematic exactness of the architect’s rendering, and the visual elegance of an artist’s brush.”

Crescent City has five Blanchard original watercolors on paper, all estimated at $1,500-$2,500, and each is signed by the artist and accompanied by his book, Jim Blanchard’s Magnificent Obsessions: New Orleans Business and Residences, 300 Years of New Orleans Architecture.

Marine Hospital, Natchez is dated 1993 and is classic Blanchard: dead-on flat perspective with incredible detail. Rev. John Bliss Warren House [Maple Street] is undated. And Van Court Townhouse is also from 1993. All Blanchard originals come in handsome frames.

NEW ORLEANS — A colorful and historic selection of promotional posters for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival are a key group of lots in Crescent City Auction Gallery‘s Important November Estates sale on Friday, November 3. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Since 1970 (with early attempts in 1968 and 1969), the event known as Jazzfest has entertained countless attendees with performances from jazz’s undisputed greats, such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Mahalia Jackson. Early posters from the first years exist, but were largely promotional in nature. Since 1975, commemorative posters have been produced for collectors, becoming icons for Jazzfest as well as valued items in their own right, often created by noted local artists.

A prime example is the 1976 poster featuring Fats Houston. Created by local artisan Maria Laredo, this signed edition is numbered 801/1000 and carries an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

Noel Rockmore (1928-1995) achieved fame in his hometown of New York as a painter, draftsman and sculptor. His career took a dramatic turn in 1970, when he suddenly changed his name from Noel Davis to Rockmore, adopting his mother’s maiden name, and relocated to New Orleans.

This pair of unsigned chromolithographs created by Rockmore for event producer George Wein date to 1970 and reflect a combination of art and graphic design with the goal of selling event tickets. They feature bold graphics and original art by Rockmore of Sister Gertrude Morgan and Chicken Henry, drummer for the Olympia Brass Band. The pair are estimated at $1,500-$2,500.

Famed “Blue Dog” Louisiana artist George Rodrigue (1944-2013) had his own contributions to the series in 1996 (clarinetist Pete Fountain) and 2000 (famed trumpet player Al Hirt). The 2000 poster is signed and numbered 5372/10,000, while the 1996 example is unsigned and numbered 4904/1000. The Al Hirt poster carries an estimate of $800-$1,200, while the Pete Fountain one is at $600-$900.

NEW ORLEANS — Two prime examples of Florida Highwaymen landscape art are the hidden gems of Crescent City Auction Gallery’s two-day September Estates Auction on Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9 (Day 1, Day 2). Bidding is active at LiveAuctioneers.

From the mid-1950s until the 1980s, a group of 26 African American landscape artists from Fort Pierce, Florida, created untold numbers of landscape paintings, sold not in galleries but instead door to door or from the trunk of a car alongside a highway. Using non-traditional materials and media, the paintings would be purchased by homeowners, office workers and vacationers, only to be brought back from Florida and distributed throughout the country.

Two key members of the Florida Highwaymen are represented in this auction, and are believed to have been trained by the father of the Highwaymen, A. E. Backus. His evocative style, largely self taught, used palette knives rather than brushes to achieve his highly realistic Florida landscapes. His works today are highly sought after by collectors.

Radiant in the glowing hues of twilight is Southern Swamp Sunset by Alfred Hair (1941-1971), a Backus student and an incredibly prolific painter from Fort Pierce. Measuring 24 by 36in, this signed and undated oil on board is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

The next lot continues the end-of-day theme and was painted by Harold Newton (1934-1994). Florida Beach by Twilight is an undated 24 by 36in oil on Upson board that is also estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Register now to bid on these two historic works of art at LiveAuctioneers.
