LONDON (AP) – From Major Tom to Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, the many faces and inspirations of David Bowie are getting a permanent home in London. Britain’s Victoria & Albert Museum announced February 23 that it has acquired Bowie’s archive of more than 80,000 items as a gift from the late musician’s estate. The trove of costumes, musical instruments, letters, lyrics, photos and more will be opened to the public at a new arts center dedicated to the chameleonlike pop icon.

In addition to rare recordings by Bob Dylan, the Beatles and other headliners, auction highlights include the original, uncensored version of David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs from 1974, the unique unassembled production sleeve originally made for the Rolling Stones’ 1968 Street Fighting Man single and an ultra-rare copy of the 1962 Tony Sheridan and the Beatles 7-inch My Bonnie single. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

STANSTED MOUNTFICHET, UK – Original photographs of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Robert Plant, and Elton John performing will appear for sale at Sworders next month. The Design auction on July 14 includes a cache of prints taken by music photographer Ed Finnell at legendary gigs held in Los Angeles in the 1970s.
