BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Lurking within the more than 1,000 lots in the lineup of the Legends: Hollywood & Royalty Auction at Julien’s Auctions, which spans Wednesday, September 6 through Friday, September 8, is an exceptional piece of television history that connects two great comedies.

A print of a portrait of the Apache leader Geronimo, which was long part of the backdrop of the Cheers bar, will be presented on the second day of the auction with an estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

The Geronimo portrait was not originally part of the Cheers set. It first decorated the dressing room of Nicholas Colasanto, who played the character of Ernie Pantusso, better known to the bar regulars as Coach. After Colasanto died in 1985, Woody Harrelson was hired to play a similar role and Geronimo was moved to a wall behind the bar’s seating area as a tribute to the late actor.

The portrait’s importance was cemented in the last episode of Cheers. Ted Danson, who played the lead character of Sam Malone, straightened the Geronimo print before turning out the lights and leaving his beloved bar through the back door.

This act was echoed in the last episode of the contemporary TV comedy Ted Lasso. In the final scene set in the Crown & Anchor, the bar frequented by supporters of the AFC Richmond football club, bar owner Mae Green, played by Annette Badland, straightens a portrait of Geronimo hanging on the wall.

Astute students of television didn’t just notice this salute from one great show to another. They also knew that Jason Sudeikis, who played the title character on Ted Lasso, is the nephew of George Wendt, who starred as Norm on Cheers.

If recent auction history is anything to go by, the Geronimo portrait should perform well. In early June, Heritage Auctions offered the James Comisar collection of television sets, props, and assorted memorabilia. The top lot was not the circa-1992 set for Johnny Carson’s late-night show, nor the pair of complete matching Batman and Robin costumes worn by Adam West and Burt Ward on the 1960s Batman TV series. The top lot was the Cheers bar set, with counter, brass railings and bar stools. Offered roughly 30 years after the show went off the air, it achieved $675,000.

Perhaps the new owner of the Cheers bar has their eye on the Geronimo print. After all, they do need to decorate the walls.
