Alberto Vargas pin-up art from the Playboy magazine collection sashays to Julien’s March 28-30

Alberto Vargas, Playboy April 1965 watercolor drawing, estimated at $30,000-$40,000 at Julien's.

GARDENA, Calif. — Twenty-four original Alberto Vargas works formerly in the Playboy magazine collection are the star attractions at Julien’s Auctions‘ ICONS: Playboy, Hugh Hefner and Marilyn Monroe three-session sale taking place Thursday, March 28 through Saturday, March 30. The catalogs are now open for viewing and bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Originally commissioned by Hugh Hefner for publication in Playboy magazine, the incredible group spans 1960-1975 and feature Vargas’ minimalist background approach to figurative art. Once considered racy, the images, showcasing subjects that have come to be known as Vargas girls, now seem quaint. Julien’s has assigned $30,000-$40,000 estimates to virtually all the lots, as so large a collection of Vargas originals has probably never tested the market at this scale.

Here are quick links to the Vargas originals:

Session 1

Session 2

Vargas almost uniformly used pencil and watercolor to create his art. The results were highly life-like while keeping the sexual tone humorous and merely suggestive. Playboy copywriters would add captions that pushed the suggestiveness into more obvious territory.

Highlights from the sale include:

Alberto Vargas, Playboy magazine October 1960, Then the patient in Room 12 turned around and tried to give me an alcohol rub.

Alberto Vargas, Playboy magazine April 1965, Can anyone beat my pair?

Alberto Vargas, Playboy magazine August 1964You know, Captain, before you invited me on this cruise I really had no idea what the first mate was supposed to do.

Alberto Vargas, Playboy magazine April 1974Lord Crumley says he has an excellent position for me.

Julien’s brings the star power with Music Icons event Feb. 27

Dolly Parton 1970s stage- and album cover-worn ensemble, estimated at $20,000-$40,000 at Julien's.

GARDENA, Calif. — Julien’s Music Icons sale, scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, presents 145 lots from the biggest names in music. The sale has added emphasis on women performers as well. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The Beatles played their final live concert in the United States on August 29, 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The ‘Stick was the home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, and assistant clubhouse manager Mike Murphy was on duty for the music event. He managed to get the band to sign a Spaulding baseball and immediately gave it to his sister, who turned around and sold it to a collector, who consigned it to the sale after 50 years of ownership. The Ringo signature has been professionally restored, but the remaining autographs are all original. As the top lot in the sale, the baseball is estimated at $50,000-$70,000.

A very 1970s ensemble custom-designed for Dolly Parton is another auction highlight. The country superstar was on her way up in 1974 when she wore her jade green polyester top and bellbottoms for the Country Gold show in Arlington, Texas. She so loved the outfit that she donned it for the cover of her In the Beginning LP, released in 1978. The lot includes a copy of the album, and is estimated at $20,000-$40,000.

Taylor Swift was already a household name in 2014 when she was profiled in a photo shoot in Glamour magazine. Three props from that shoot are included in the Julien’s auction, and each is accompanied with a photo-matched image from the piece. First up is a Polaroid SX-70 Land camera ($400-$600) from a shot where Swift looks over a collection of Polaroid prints; next is an old travel trunk ($1,000-$2,000); and finally there’s a Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite guitar ($8,000-$12,000) seen being strummed by the pop star.

Another LP-cover wardrobe item is a Julien’s highlight. Johnny Cash wore this jacket, estimated at $10,000-$20,000, for the cover shoot for 1973’s CBS release Country & Western Superstar. And he presented his office Bently acoustic guitar, now estimated at $20,000-$30,000, to Johnny Cash Museum founder Bill Miller.

Dresses worn by Princesses Diana and Grace tripled their estimates at Julien’s

Princess Diana’s Catherine Walker black silk velvet cocktail dress, which sold for $250,000 ($325,000 with buyer’s premium) at Julien's.

GARDENA, Calif. – Demand for authenticated celebrity-worn fashion continues to grow in today’s market, with numerous lots hitting triple-estimate numbers at Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion, a sale held January 18 at Julien’s Auctions. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Royal fashion reigned supreme with one of Princess Diana’s signature Catherine Walker garments taking center stage. Her black silk velvet cocktail dress hammered at $250,000 and sold for $325,000 with buyer’s premium, more than three times its low estimate of $100,000. Diana wore the dress to a private event, and it came with full documentation. Julien’s holds the world record for the most expensive dress worn by Princess Diana: a Jacques Azagury celestial dress that earned $1.1 million in 2023 at its Hollywood Legends auction with TCM.

From Great Britain to Monaco, another iconic royal look made a grand showing. This time it was Princess Grace, the Hollywood Golden Age star and Academy Award-winning actress. Her 1961 Givenchy ensemble worn to the White House with husband Prince Rainier to meet President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy also hammered at $250,000 and sold for $325,000 with buyer’s premium. The ensemble consists of what’s described as a ‘Kelly-green’ wool tweed sleeveless dress with a gathered skirt, an elbow-length sleeved tweed jacket, and a white hat.

The three-tier tutu skirt worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the opening credits for HBO’s Sex and the City turned heads once again when it hammered for $40,000 and sold for $52,000 (with buyer’s premium), six and a half times its low estimate of $8,000.

Other Highlights included:

Audrey Hepburn’s 1970 Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche dress, worn to her son’s christening, met its high estimate, hammering for $10,000 and selling for $13,000 with buyer’s premium.

Whitney Houston’s Burberry London cotton trench coat with metallic gold coating, worn at her Mawazine Music Festival performance in Morocco in 2008, hammered for $3,500 and sold for $4,550.

“This showstopping collection of exquisite garments adorned on the royals, Princess Diana and Princess Grace of Monaco and the streetwear-style tutu worn on Hollywood icon Sarah Jessica Parker that made fashion statements at the time of their appearances are now a part of auction history,” said Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions. “Today’s auction’s results amplify the value and collectability of these fashion looks that became some of the most iconic style moments of our time.”

A Lost in Space robot, the Dude’s robe and Princess Diana’s dresses lifted Julien’s to $7M

The B-9 Robot from CBS’ 'Lost In Space' 1965-1968 television series, which sold for $350,000 ($455,000 with buyer’s premium) at Julien's.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Already established as a leader in Hollywood memorabilia auctions, Julien’s continued its string of monster successes with its four-day Contemporary and Classic Hollywood sessions held December 14, December 15, December 16, and December 17. The sale stomped estimates and set records all along the way, posting a $7 million total and becoming Julien’s biggest sale ever. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

The first two sessions at the Beverly Hilton hotel were called Contemporary Hollywood and featured screen-used items from motion pictures and television, many instantly recognizable to millions. A classic example of this type of star lot was the B-9 Robot from CBS’ Lost In Space 1965-1968 television series. After production ended, the B-9 made famous by repeatedly intoning “Danger, Will Robinson!” (as voiced by Dick Tufeld) was placed into storage by 20th Century Fox, which had produced the series for creator Irwin Allen. Some years after, sci-fi special effects legend Greg Jein (1945-2022) contacted Fox, acquired the B-9 and began a painstaking restoration on the prop originally designed by Robert Kinoshita (1914-2014), himself a legend for having also created Robby the Robot from the 1956 film Forbidden Planet.

The robot auctioned by Julien’s was one of two originally created, with this one being the so-called “stunt” version that was used when actor Bob May was not needed inside. Much traveled by Jein to innumerable sci-fi conventions during the years, the B-9 includes signatures from both May and Tufeld and features contemporary restoration to include show-sourced classic lines that play through a speaker. Estimated at $300,000-$500,000, the B-9 hammered at $350,000 ($455,000 with buyer’s premium).

Though he has been gone for 50 years, passion for Bruce Lee (1940-1973) continues unabated. From his earliest days as a martial arts teacher to the likes of Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Chuck Norris (both of whom would appear in his later films) to his 1966 debut as Kato on The Green Hornet spinoff of Batman on ABC, Lee’s charm and sheer brilliance captivated viewers and martial arts fans alike. One of his greatest performances was in Fist of Fury, a 1972 film made just a year before his death from a cerebral edema. In the movie, he battled adversaries using nunchaku, a weapon constructed from two wooden dowels connected by 13 chain links. Created by George Lee and accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the builder, the screen-used nunchaku blew out the $20,000-$30,000 presale estimate to hammer for $125,000 ($162,500 with buyer’s premium).

Day three was titled The Big Lebowski and included 257 lots related to the 1998 Coen Brothers comedy that became a cult classic after tanking at the box office upon release. Two absolutely iconic screen-worn items by actor Jeff Bridges as The Dude, also known as Jeffery Lebowski, were highly anticipated and did not disappoint. The Dude’s bathrobe and Jockey t-shirt seen throughout the film — the Ralphs supermarket half-and-half shopping sequence, the attack at his Hollywood bungalow by henchmen of porn king Jackie Treehorn (Ben Gazarra), and while meeting the “other” Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston) and Brandt (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Estimated at $30,000-$50,000, bidders romped past that range and kept going to a final hammer of $130,000 ($169,000 with buyer’s premium).

The Dude’s sunglasses were also top performers. Estimated at $20,000-$30,000, they achieved the far-out sum of $70,000 ($91,000 with buyer’s premium), further entrenching The Big Lebowski as a core element of late-20th century popular culture.

Demand for Princess Diana-associated clothing continues its meteoric rise in the auction market. Seen as a fashion icon during her reign as the Princess of Wales, Diana was known for wearing only the finest designer clothing in her public appearances. Julien’s had four Diana-related items during its fourth session, including what would become the top-selling item of the entire four-day event – Diana’s romantic ballerina-length evening dress designed by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury and worn by her in Florence, Italy on April 23, 1985. The gown was accompanied by a matching illustration and sold for $900,000 ($1,148,080 with buyer’s premium), giving Julien’s the new world record at auction for Princess Diana-worn clothing. (The previous record had been $604,800).

Screen- and celebrity-famous couture walks the runway at Julien’s Jan. 18

Princess Diana-worn Catherine Walker black velvet cocktail dress, estimated at $100,000-$200,000 at Julien's.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Julien’s Auctions has announced Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion, a curated sale scheduled for Thursday, January 18 of royal and celebrity fashion that affected pop culture and runways. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Given the recent performance of Princess Diana-related fashions, it’s clear that collectors believe now is the time to bring her clothing to market. The sale’s top lot is a Catherine Walker black velvet cocktail dress with ivory satin accents. Originally sold at the now-legendary 1997 Christie’s auction, the dress is estimated at $100,000-$200,000. Diana favored Walker’s designs, reportedly wearing more than 1,000 in her lifetime, and, sadly, one to her grave.

It’s hard to top Diana-worn garments, but a 1961 Givenchy couture ensemble in kelly green wool lined in silk, made for Princess Grace of Monaco, just might do it. Best known as actress Grace Kelly prior to her marriage to Monaco’s Prince Rainier, Grace wore the Givenchy outfit on May 24, 1961 while being welcomed to the White House by President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. The ensemble would make another state visit appearance the next month in Dublin, Ireland. The Princess Grace Givenchy garments are estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

A black and sapphire blue chiton-style Grecian-inspired evening dress, designed by Haitian-American designer Fabrice Simon and owned by Audrey Hepburn, is another lot with serious star power. The gown is labeled Fabrice, Saks Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue Room, and has a hand-written label attesting to the item’s provenance: Lighthouse Association for the Blind, Donated by Audrey Hepburn. It is estimated at $10,000-$20,000.

The tutu worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the opening credits of HBO’s Sex and the City television series is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the show’s costume designer, Patricia Fields. It is one of five originally used for the sequence, and was found by Fields in a $5 bargain bin. It carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

Reese Witherspoon had a career-making role as Elle in MGM’s 2001 comedy Legally Blonde. Accompanying her everywhere was her pet chihuahua, Bruiser Woods (actually a dog named Moonie). In a key sequence where Elle is attempting to attract the attention of her boyfriend, who is playing in a football game, she dressed in a pink ensemble and dressed Bruiser to match. That pink chihuahua sweater now comes to market with a certificate of authenticity, and is estimated at $500-$700.

Eliminator: ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill collection blew away presale estimates, claiming $3M+ at Julien’s

DALLAS – There were no cheap sunglasses at the lifetime collection dispersal of ZZ Top bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill by Julien’s Auctions December 7, December 8 and December 9. In fact, far from it – the 1,000-plus lot sale blew away its top presale estimate and had 100% sellthrough for a combined total of more than $3 million – Julien’s highest-grossing single artist auction in 2023. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

As anticipated, the sale’s top lot was Hill’s beloved 1953 Fender Precision bass. The most-played instrument by Hill out of all the guitars in the auction, it sold for $310,000 ($393,700 with buyer’s premium), nearly three times the presale high estimate of $80,000-$120,000. The P-bass sold after a nearly seven-minute bidding battle. It is now the second-highest selling bass in the world after Paul McCartney’s Yamaha BB-1200 bass, which sold in 2021, and in front of Bill Wyman’s Fender Mustang, which sold in 2020.

Another top performer was Hill’s fur bass guitar, which he played in ZZ Top’s iconic 1983 Legs music video. It sold to a bidder in the room for $250,000 ($317,500 with buyer’s premium), nearly four times its original estimate of $80,000. The 1983 Dean Explorer style bass, in sheepskin finish with the ZZ Top logo painted on the fretboard, was attached to a rig worn around Hill’s waist to make it spin, an unforgettable element to the video performance.

An interesting lot was Hill’s 1983 Wayne Charvel custom Eliminator hot rod-shaped bass guitar with the distinctive red and yellow finish. Stage-played and featured at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland, it was estimated at $40,000-$60,000 but only managed $30,000 ($39,000 with buyer’s premium), making it one of the few underperformers of the sale.

The 1983 Eliminator album was a career-making record for ZZ Top. They were already international stars before, but with the dawn of music video, the band embraced the medium and literally made it their own, with hit after hit being supported on MTV by video versions of the songs. The band was recognized in 1984 at the MTV Music Video Awards — at one time, one of the most prestigious events in the music industry — with this award for the Legs music video. Fans took note and sent the iconic ‘moon man’ statuette to $20,000 ($26,000 with buyer’s premium) against a presale estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

Julien’s Played, Worn & Torn sale rocked, with multiple record-breaking lots

Kurt Cobain Levi's jeans, which sold for $680,000 ($884,000 with buyer's premium) at Julien's Auctions.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Julien’s Auctions rocked the music memorabilia world with record-setting numbers for a wide range of iconic guitars, stage-worn clothing and more in Played, Worn & Torn, a three-day event held at the Nashville Hard Rock Casino in celebration of the house’s 20th anniversary. Complete results for November 16, November 17 and November 18 are now available at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale boasted a spectacular lineup of more than 1,000 pieces of music history from rock royalty, including items owned and used by Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa, KISS and Mötley Crüe. Julien’s reports this sale produced the largest number of registrants in its 20-year history.

The headlining items at the auction were two iconic guitars that sold in unprecedented back-to-back million-dollar sales. On Thursday, Eric Clapton’s iconic ‘The Fool’ guitar sold for $1.27 million to The Jim Irsay Collection in Indianapolis, marking the first time a Clapton guitar has sold for seven figures at auction and a Clapton guitar world record. Kurt Cobain’s Skystang I Fender Mustang electric guitar, played at his final public performance during Nirvana’s 1993-1994 In Utero tour, was acquired by Japan-based businessman Mitsuru Sato for $1.5 million. A portion of the auction proceeds for both guitars will go towards Kicking The Stigma, the Indianapolis Colts and the Irsay family’s mental health awareness initiative.

Kurt Cobain’s Levi’s jeans sold for $412,750, a total of 40 times above its original estimate of $10,000, setting a new world record for the most expensive Levi jeans ever sold at auction. The jeans have been photo-matched to performances, the video for Heart-Shaped Box and an appearance at the MTV Awards.

“Julien’s Played, Worn and Torn auction event was another one for the record books in our 20 years in the industry – a historic auction that set two world records,” said President and Chief Executive Officer of Julien’s Auctions, Darren Julien. “Two of the most important guitars in all of rock history, Eric Clapton’s ‘The Fool’ and Kurt Cobain’s Skystang I guitar, were sold this weekend that brought in the most record number of bidders from all over the world. We thank the city of Nashville and all the organizations who worked with us here for having us in our inaugural auction in Music City to celebrate our 20th anniversary.”

DALLAS — So massive it will take three days of auctions to sell, the incredible collection of the late ZZ Top bassist and vocalist Dusty Hill comes to market at Julien’s Auctions Thursday, December 7, Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9. The nearly 1,200-plus lots are available for bidding now at LiveAuctioneers.

Hill (1949-2021), who passed away after a short illness, was a founding member of ZZ Top, the American band known for its Texas-infused blues-rock grooves and recordings that have sold 50 million worldwide. As the band’s bassist and primary singer, his passing might have been considered a death blow to the band, but co-founders Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard honored his wishes to continue, with longtime guitar technician Elwood Francis stepping in to handle bass.

The auction showcases the rock icon’s spectacular one-of-a-kind instruments, custom-made wardrobe, gear, and style items such as his favorite cowboy hats, boots, buckles, and his signature sunglasses, as well as memorabilia from his groundbreaking five-decade career. A portion of the auction proceeds will benefit the MusiCares charity.

“Dusty treasured all of the items in this auction and it means so much to me that the fans, who he loved, will have an opportunity to own something from his personal collection. He would be so happy to know that this auction will benefit other musicians in need through the efforts of MusiCares,” said Charleen “Chuck” Hill, Dusty’s widow.

The top lots on all three days are, of course, bass guitars that Hill played throughout his ZZ Top career. Perhaps most recognizable is the 1983 Dean Explorer-style bass in a sheepskin finish with the ZZ Top logo painted on the fretboard, which was featured in the music video for Legs from 1983’s Eliminator album. The Dean icon carries an estimate of $80,000-$120,000.

Retired in 2012 due to road wear, Dusty’s 1953 Fender Precision bass (serial number 970) was probably his most-played instrument, appearing on the cover of 1975’s Fandango! and on countless songs and tour appearances. “Early in ZZ Top’s career, Billy and I drove up from Houston to Dallas —this is one of those stories you always hear, but this really happened — and we went to a pawn shop called Rocky’s Pawn Shop and on the wall was a Fender bass guitar and this guy truly had no idea what he had, and I get Billy to make the deal because he’s better at that than I am. Anyway, he worked him and worked him and I got the bass for $70. We’re leaving and Billy goes ‘Nope, wait a minute, no deal. You have to throw in the case.’  So he actually threw the case in, and it was close to an original case, for $70.” The P-bass is estimated at $80,000-$120,000.

Eliminator was not just the title of the breakout 1983 multi-platinum recording, but also the name of guitarist Billy Gibbons’ 1933 Ford three-window coupe hot rod, featured prominently in the album artwork and music videos for the release. Naturally, the guitarist and bassist had to have matching guitars, so they called Wayne Charvel, famed creator of Charvel guitars used by many iconic rock musicians, to create Eliminators for their tour.

Wayne Charvel’s son, Michael, posted condolences on social media after Hill’s passing, sharing childhood memories of this bass. “The most memorable bass that my dad built for Dusty was in 1983 for the Eliminator Tour. He made a Car Guitar and a matching Car Bass for Billy and Dusty. The instruments were made to match Billy’s 33 Ford three-window coupe, known as ‘The Eliminator Coupe.’ The knock-offs on the wheels were the volume and tone control, and the tailpipes blew smoke. Those were some great memories; I remember Billy calling my dad at three am … ZZ Top was on tour in Germany. Billy said the guitars were well received, and when they shot smoke, the crowd went wild!” The Charvel is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

GARDENA, Calif. — For 20 years, Julien’s Auctions has brought the magic of the entertainment industries to the world through countless auctions of stage-worn, concert-played and screen-used items found nowhere else. In celebration of its anniversary, Julien’s has announced Played, Worn and Torn, a three-day sale of important memorabilia on Thursday, November 16, Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18. The catalogs are open for bidding now at LiveAuctioneers.

Topping expectations for Day 1 is Paul McCartney & Wings’ double-decker, open-top bus used for their 1972 tour of Europe, his first as an ex-Beatle. Painstakingly restored to 1972 specifications and in perfect mechanical shape, the bus has appeared at numerous music and vintage vehicle exhibitions. McCartney noted in a past interview, “We painted the outside psychedelic, like a magic bus. If you look at it very straight, very conventionally, it was quite a mad thing to do, to put a playpen on the top deck of the bus and put all the children in there while driving around Europe. It was not what you’d expect from a normal band. But we weren’t a normal band.” The lot is estimated at $200,000-$300,000.

Jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was renowned for his unique instruments featuring an upturned horn. One such trumpet, from the collection of famed jazz musician Joey DeFrancesco, comes to market with full provenance documentation. Created for Gillespie by Martin, the horn is offered with a custom case as well. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

In a nod to The Who, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was taken with smashing guitars at the end of sets while on tour. One such piece, a made-in-Japan Fender Stratocaster, did not survive its chance encounter with a 1992 Buenos Aires stage, and ended up as a listener prize on BBC radio in England. Signed by the band and, of course, in pieces, the Fender is estimated at $500,000-$700,000.

Pop singer Lady Gaga is known for her couture, so it’s fitting that Julien’s marks its 20th with a Gaga-worn dress and gloves from her acceptance of an RIAA six-times-platinum award for her A Star Is Born soundtrack. With full documentation by designer Adriana Sahar, it is expected to bring $6,000-$8,000.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Princess Diana and Dennis Hopper items brought enormous star power to Julien’s Auctions September 6-8, with royalty-worn gowns, art and more delivering for consignors at its Legends: Hollywood and Royalty sale.

Three gowns worn publicly by the late British royal brought staggering sums. Princess Diana’s scarlet metallic jacquard chiffon gown, designed by Bruce Oldfield, was first worn in 1989 and was last seen in 1991 at the London world premiere of Hot Shots starring Charlie Sheen. It hammered at $450,000 ($585,000 with buyer’s premium), topping its estimate of $200,000-$400,000.

Estimated at $100,000-$200,000, a Catherine Walker bi-color gown worn by Princess Diana at a Toronto gala dinner on October 26, 1991, soared to $450,000 ($585,000 with buyer’s premium). Another Catherine Walker gown in ivory silk crepe and black silk velvet, worn by Princess Diana to a private event, hammered at $400,000 ($520,000 with buyer’s premium).

Audrey Hepburn’s screen-worn haute couture evening dress designed by Hubert Givenchy demanded the spotlight, selling for $350,000 ($455,000 with buyer’s premium). The instantly recognizable gown from Blake Edwards’s classic 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s topped its estimate of $200,000-$300,000.

A man of many talents and interests, Dennis Hopper (1936-2010) was at the forefront of the worlds of film and art. An avid painter and collector, Hopper helped the nascent careers of people such as Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha long before their stardom, and artifacts from his estate reflect his long-standing friendships with them.

A collection of items associated with filmmaker and collage artist Wallace Berman (1926-1976) carried a modest estimate of $500-$700, but furious bidding between the floor and internet participants drove the group to $12,500 ($16,250 with buyer’s premium).

A Nudie tuxedo jacket, worn by Hopper to the 42nd Academy Awards where his 1969 film Easy Rider was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, with Jack Nicholson nominated for Best Supporting Actor, sold for $7,500 ($9,750 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $1,000-$2,000. Vintage stock images from Alamy show Hopper wearing the jacket alongside Michelle Philips, Jack Nicholson and others on the red carpet.
