From Bing to Barbie: American, Japanese, and European toys at Morphy Feb. 14-16

DENVER, Pa. – It’s toy time at Morphy Auctions, where 1,425 lots of top-notch toys and collectibles will be auctioned on Wednesday, February 14, Thursday, February 15, and Friday, February 16. Virtually every popular toy category is represented in the auction lineup, from classics such as pressed-steel automotive, European tin windups, and cast-iron mechanical banks, to modern-era and vintage favorites such as postwar Japanese tin, Barbies, and Star Wars collectibles.

More than 100 banks will cross the auction block on Day 1 and Day 2, including 56 cast-iron mechanicals. Many favorites by J. & E. Stevens of Cromwell, Connecticut are at the forefront. A near-mint ‘Bad Accident’ bank with bright colors and 97% of its paint retains its original wood factory box and is estimated at $4,000-$8,000; while an excellent-plus Boy Scout Camp bank with its original flag is estimated at $3,000-$6,000. The highest-estimated Stevens mechanical, at $10,000-$15,000, is a near-mint ‘Called Out’ mechanical bank, which has a sentry theme and was assembled from very rare bronze patterns.

Bing is represented within the sale’s approximately 50 European toy lots. A Bing Keiser Wilhelm 40in clockwork tin ocean liner with four stacks is mostly original and has 10 lifeboats. In excellent condition, it is guided by a $3,000-$5,000 estimate.

Lehmann, another revered German producer of tin toys, based many of their most popular designs on actual people Ernst Paul Lehmann encountered in everyday life or during his travels. His only purported self-indulgence was in creating the wonderful flywheel toy known as ‘Walking Down Broadway’ or, alternatively, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Lehmann’ or ‘Lehmann Family.’ It depicts a well-dressed couple out for a stroll with their pug dog on a leash. The sale features a VG-near mint example of this scarce and early toy with its original box bottom and an original pictorial label fastened to a newer lid. The estimate is $2,000-$4,000.

The train category includes productions by American Flyer, Ives, and Lionel, among others. Leading the 85-lot selection of Lionels is a prewar O-gauge Mickey Mouse Circus Train set with accessories, including all 12 of the original tickets, windup key, and a brochure showing the set for sale for $2. In excellent condition, the set is estimated at $4,000-$8,000.

In the Japanese toy category, the sale includes an Alps battery-operated Missile Robot. Pristine and appearing unused, the 15in robot is fully intact, with its dish antenna and original box with cardboard inserts. Missile Robot will step into the spotlight with a $3,000-$6,000 estimate.

Another stellar example of postwar Japanese toy excellence is a scarce lithographed-tin #98 Champion Racer. Measuring 18.5in in length, the friction-powered open racer with helmeted driver is graded excellent to near-mint and estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

The sports memorabilia category is led by an ultra-rare BBCE-authenticated 1976/’77 Topps ‘Hockey’ wax case containing four factory-sealed wax boxes. Each box contains 36 sealed 15¢ bubble gum picture-card packs. “Collectors rarely have the opportunity to acquire factory-sealed boxes of this type,” said Morphy’s Toys & Trains Department Head Tommy Sage Jr. “Morphy’s has a strong following for sports cards, especially since our auction one year ago of an unopened 1952 Topps baseball brick, which sold for $873,300. We expect a lot of interest in this outstanding Hockey wax box, which is estimated at $12,000-$16,000.”

To pop culture fans, there is no Barbie doll more desirable than the 1959 example known as blonde ponytail #850. Morphy’s will offer a very good original and boxed example of the #850 wearing the iconic black-and-white striped swimsuit and with clean original earrings. Accompanied by its stand, booklet, and a nice variety of extra clothing, accessories, and shoes, the lot is estimated at $2,000-$5,000.

Pre- and postwar Lionel electric trains hammered above expectations at Weiss

Lionel no. 10 Interurban, which sold for $4,250 ($5,100 with buyer’s premium) at Weiss Auctions.

LYNBROOK, N.Y. – The two most popular areas of Lionel train collecting – the post-World War II era, followed by the prewar era – demonstrated their resilience at Weiss Auctions’ Vintage Toy Trains sale December 21. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

As lifetime collections continue to come to market, houses such as Weiss have taken the approach of realistic estimates in an attempt to court sideline watchers into the fray. And it’s worked – many items given lowball estimates well exceeded their potential, creating strong bidding activity both in-house and online via LiveAuctioneers.

Built between 1910 and 1916, Lionel’s no. 10 Interurban was usually paired with a no. 1010 unpowered coach. In this unboxed solo example, Weiss had placed a reasonable $800-$1,600 estimate for a play-worn but largely original no. 10 that had rubber-stamped lettering – often missing due to hands rubbing them off during the years – which was still prominent. A determined bidder opened with a $3,800 offer, setting off a short but furious battle with another suitor. In the end, the no. 10 hammered for $4,250 ($5,100 with buyer’s premium), making it the top lot of the sale.

Offered in the heyday of Standard gauge production, Lionel’s State Set – featuring Pullman coaches with American states on their nameboards – was one of the most costly items a buyer could purchase. This set of three cars – California, New York and Colorado – were variously missing interior details such as chairs and clerestory windows, but were generally in good-minus condition. Weiss placed a $600-$1,000 estimate on the unboxed set, but once again, bidding began well ahead of the high number, at $3,250, and kept going until a final hammer of $3,800 ($4,560 with buyer’s premium).

Electric trains require regular servicing to stay in operating condition. To facilitate this, The Lionel Corporation (manufacturer of Lionel trains from 1900 to 1969, when they divested their remaining toy manufacturing operations to General Mills) set up a network of authorized service stations – generally the same retailers who sold the sets seasonally or year-round. The no. 5C test set was used by service personnel to diagnose both locomotives and operating cars, and in later years has become a valued tool for collectors to maintain their fleets. Estimated at $300-$600, this no. 5C sold for $1,350 ($1,620 with buyer’s premium), needing only a new cord and a healthy cleaning.

A like-new but unboxed Lionel no. 2341 Jersey Central Fairbanks-Morse TrainMaster dual-motor diesel was another star performer. Once again carrying a modest $500-$1,000 estimate for a test run-only example with no screw cracks (the plastic shell would often break at the screw-mounting points to the frame) and a clean battery compartment (no long-term storage with a decaying D-cell to power the horn unit), it hammered for a solid $2,300 ($2,760 with buyer’s premium).

Triumph of tinplate: Prewar Lionel steamed to great results at Harris

Lionel Blue Comet passenger set, which sold for $6,600 ($8,100 with buyer’s premium) at Harris Toy Train Auctions.

RENO, Nev. — Founded in 1900, Lionel electric trains have been a family tradition for generations, preserved and passed along like the family heirlooms they are. A major collection of both Lionel prewar and postwar (referring to World War II) came to auction at Harris Toy Train Auctions November 10 with very strong prewar performances. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Debuting in 1929 for the Central of New Jersey, the Blue Comet was an express passenger service between Jersey City and Atlantic City. Lionel’s model followed a year later, issued in Standard gauge, a large, heavy format fashioned from painted and plated steel and brass. The expensive electric train sets sold well and were cherished by their owners; it’s not uncommon to find examples today in nearly new condition. The Harris sale had one such example, complete with original boxes, originally and unrealistically estimated at $20-$100. It hammered for a more realistic $6,600 ($8,100 with buyer’s premium).

Lionel collectors love rarity and condition, and this Lionel no. 024 operating device for a no. 313 bascule bridge department store display delivered on both. Rarely seen because it was cataloged solely for use with even more rare commercial displays (strategically placed at urban department stores that carried and sold Lionel products), the controller was estimated at — yes, again, $20-$100 — but hammered at $3,800 ($4,700 with buyer’s premium).

Lionel was an early licensee of Walt Disney Studios, offering a number of items in the 1930s. This clockwork (wind-up) Mickey Mouse circus train from circa 1935 included three lithographed tin cars featuring Disney characters and a complete cardstock ‘circus’ big-top background designed by Disney artists for Lionel. It sold for $1,850 ($2,275 with buyer’s premium).

Lionel plots were small, factory-built scenic components with lighted tin houses and hedges and trees. The plots conveyed a more finished look to floor or tabletop setups of Lionel trains without requiring permanent construction, but their extreme fragility meant that almost none survived in good condition in a child’s hands. This large no. 198 plot, from the no. 199 set of plots, was in very good condition and went to a new home for $3,100 ($3,800 with buyer’s premium).

Lionel factory prototypes on track to win at Weiss Dec. 21

Lionel factory prototype no. 6464-125 'girl's set' boxcar, estimated at $2,000-$4,000 at Weiss Auctions.

LYNWOOD, N.Y. — In the world of model train collecting, nothing is more exciting than discovering an item that is clearly not from regular production, but has all the hallmarks of being a pre-production sample or design study. Known as ‘factory prototypes,’ these items can command huge sums in the contemporary collector market due to their one-of-one status and high desirability.

Weiss AuctionsVintage Toy Trains sale on Thursday, December 21 has not one but three Lionel factory prototypes from a prominent New York-area collection. They all come with some degree of provenance, helping to boost their value. The complete catalog is available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

First up is a Lionel no. 6357-50 prototype caboose for the 1960 ‘father and son’ set, a one-year-only special with both traditional O gauge and newly released HO scale train consists and an oval elevated-viaduct track plan that allowed the HO to run in parallel underneath its O gauge counterpart. The ‘father and son’ nickname given to it by collectors refers both to the larger O gauge and smaller HO scale trains, as well as the depiction of a boy and his dad enjoying the set in the 1960 Lionel consumer catalog. The caboose has decal lettering and comes from a well-known collection that will be identified to the winning bidder to enhance provenance. The caboose is estimated at $2,000-$5,000.

A Lionel no. 6464 boxcar prototype for Norfolk & Western has hand-applied decals and never-run wheelsets on factory trucks. The item is unnumbered and never went into production, but may have served as inspiration for the later MPC / Fundimensions-era no. 6-9205 N&W boxcar. It is estimated at $500-$1,000 and, according to the lot notes, comes with a “letter of reputed provenance.”

Highly desirable now but a disaster upon its initial release was the 1957 Lionel ‘girl’s set,’ with locomotive, tender and rolling stock all painted in pastel colors to appeal to young girls. As it turned out, girls wanted toy trains, but they wanted them in the regular train colors offered to their brothers. Finding few takers, dealers resorted to breaking up these ‘girl’s’ sets and selling them off piecemeal. Weiss has a Lionel no. 6464-125 New York Central Pacemaker boxcar with early rubber-stamp lettering with characteristics that make this a pre-production sample. The lot notes state it comes with a “letter of reputed provenance” and, like the N&W boxcar, has been in the same collection since 1963. It carries an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The ongoing dispersal of the massive Conti model train collection continues Sunday, December 3 at Turner Auctions and Appraisals. The 238-lot catalog focuses on various eras of Lionel O gauge and offerings from niche competitors along with modern and classic Standard gauge. The sale is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The Conti collection developed during the course of 75 years, with a distinct focus on Lionel O gauge. Many items appear to be new in box, while others clearly were acquired from dealers at train shows. Most modern items are boxed, while older examples tend to lack original packaging.

One notable exception to this pattern is a Lionel no. 392E and 392T steam locomotive and tender with a three-car passenger consist. The set comes with individual component boxes but no set box and appears to be in fair to good condition. The set was offered in Standard gauge from 1932-1939, and this example seems to be from the middle of the production period. It is estimated at $500-$1,000.

Built only in 1952, the Lionel no. 2345 Western Pacific F3 is considered very difficult to find, though most sophisticated collections have them. This set includes a B-unit with blanked-out portholes, an unfortunate cost-saving maneuver on the part of Lionel. With a clean battery compartment (many are found corroded), the unboxed F3 A-B-A set is estimated at $400-$800.

Released in 1956, the Lionel no. 2378 Milwaukee Road F3 A-B diesel set is also highly sought-after by collectors. This example has reproduction boxes and flaking to the A-unit’s nose decal but is otherwise in good, unrestored condition. It is estimated at $750-$1,000.

A modern Lionel LLC-era no. 6-18045 Commodore Vanderbilt with RailSounds and TrainMaster Command comes with a shelf-worn box featuring artwork used for the 1996 Lionel Corporation catalog issued soon after the purchase of the company from Lionel Trains Inc. owner Richard Kughn. The art was created by noted rail painter Mike Danneman, and the set is estimated at $400-$600.

BUFORD, Ga. – The LiveAuctioneers price database lists 52 pictures by Johnnie Swearingen (1908-93) offered at auction since 2005. The sums they commanded suggest a steady increase in interest in the Texas outsider artist during those 18 years.

A new record for the Reverend Swearingen was posted at the Slotin Folk Art auction on August 5-6 when his 4ft 1in by 3ft 1in oil-on-canvas Blue Church, estimated at $2,000-$4,000, sold to a bidder via LiveAuctioneers for $8,750. Slotin had previously sold a Swearingen work titled Going To Church for $4,200 in April 2021 and a second, Bases Loaded, for $4,100 in April 2022.

Swearingen, from Chappell, Texas, ranks among the most important Texas folk painters. He first found fame in 1961 after an article was published in the Houston Post and held his first formal art exhibition in 1981. Later, his technicolor work was featured in both the Black History, Black Visions (1989) and Spirited Journeys-Texas Self Taught Artists of the Twentieth Century (1992) exhibitions held at the University of Texas. Rarely are his pictures dated.

VINELAND, N.J. – The auction was titled Basics, but there was nothing routine about the model train that took the top spot at Bertoia Auction’s August 10-11 sale. This version of the classic pre-war Lionel 763E Hudson powered to a hammer price of $2,750 against an estimate of $1,000-$1,500. As always, condition was the telling factor.

The O gauge locomotive and oil tender, issued by the Lionel Corporation circa 1937-42 at a time when the firm was setting new standards for realism in model trains, were both boxed examples and came on a factory-issue 14in oak display stand. The tender was deemed “excellent” and the locomotive “pristine.” The winning bidder came via LiveAuctioneers.

The 763E commands a premium above most Lionel locomotives. Three variants are known: the first, as shown here, in gunmetal gray with a sheet metal oil tender; another in black and a rarity with a die cast coal tender. In 1991, one of the few known mint and boxed versions sold for a mighty $17,500.

COPAKE, N.Y. – An Australian bidder secured this early 19th-century 2ft 4in Bardin terrestrial library globe at Copake Auction’s July 29 estate sale in upstate New York. A textbook example of a still-popular late Georgian form, the papers titled The New British Terrestrial Globe are dated 1799 and include reference to the newly chartered waters of “New Holland” and “Van Dieman’s Land” (later known as Australia and Tasmania).

The cartouche names both the well-known globe maker W. & J.M. Bardin and Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist who sailed with James Cook on the Endeavour (1768-1771). For obvious reasons, these globes carry a particular resonance in Australia. This one, with a $800-$1,200 estimate, finished at $15,000.

VAN NUYS, Calif. — Few things are more satisfying than a perfect union of art and science. Harold “Doc” Edgerton understood that fact and made the most of it. The MIT professor (1903-1990) had many achievements to his credit, including work with Jacques Cousteau that contributed to the creation of side-scan solar technology, which made it easier to spot shipwrecks on the ocean floor. But he will always, and rightly, be best known for his strobe photography, which captured images of phenomena that happen too fast for the eye to see.

In 1985, Edgerton released a limited edition portfolio with the straightforward title of Ten Dye Transfer Photographs. It included some of his most famous images, such as Milk Drop Coronet, taken in 1957 and showing the collision of a drop of milk with a red surface, yielding a shape that looks like an alabaster crown; and Cutting the Card Quickly!, shot in 1964 and capturing the instant a bullet bisects a Jack of Diamonds playing card.

In its debut sale of photographs on August 2, Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) offered a complete Edgerton Ten Dye Transfer Photographs portfolio, number 83 of 150, each image signed to the verso by him, with an estimate of $10,000-$15,000. It hammered for $19,000.

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. – A Kangxi period (1662-1722) blue and white porcelain vase from a private Long Island collection sold to a bidder via LiveAuctioneers for $23,040 at Topwellsauction on July 15. The textbook 18in-high baluster form was decorated with alternating panels of auspicious imagery – deer in landscapes symbolizing longevity and prosperity and items from the Hundred Precious Objects. Like most Kangxi porcelain, it lacked a reign mark and instead used an underglaze double blue ring with a pictogram of an Artemesia leaf.
