Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Jean-Michel Frank showcased at Piasa March 20

Jean Prouvé, set of six ‘Métropole’ chairs, no. 305, estimated at €80,000-€120,000 ($87,090-$130,635) at Piasa.

PARIS — Fine quality and an eye for great design characterize the 210 lots coming up for bid at Piasa on Wednesday, March 20. Its French Design sale features some of the 20th century’s brightest talents, and the catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was a modern-day Renaissance man who was largely self-taught. His career spanned architecture and industrial design, as well as structural and furniture design. It is said that his greatest achievement was taking his background in manufacturing and bringing it to architecture without erasing the importance of a building’s aesthetics. His furniture designs are coveted today, as seen in this set of six no. 305 Metropole chairs. They descend directly from Prouvé’s personal collection, and were made in 1950. They are estimated at €80,000-€120,000 ($87,090-$130,635).

A titan of French design, Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) is represented by 23 lots in Piasa’s sale. Built between 1955 and 1962, this Nuage wall-mounted bookshelf is made of lacquered metal and wood and measures 6ft in length. It is estimated at €60,000-€90,000 ($65,320-$97,980).

Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941) is considered a major French figure in Art Deco, but differed from his peers through his use of exotic veneers and natural patterns, such as snake and sharkskin. This parchment-clad wooden desk dates to 1930 and is nearly 60in in width. Its estimate is €70,000-€90,000 ($76,205-$97,980).

Marc du Plantier (1901-1975) is represented by a pair of 35in-square coffee tables made in 1963. Built with patinated iron and stained glass, they were first marketed in an Artedecor Los Angeles commercial flyer as ‘no. 24.’ The pair is estimated at €30,000-€40,000 ($32,660-€43,545).

PARIS – The February 15 sale at Piasa titled Pablo Picasso and his Friends included a series of artworks to which the great man had contributed in some way. Items from the collection of the French banker and Modern art collector Max Pellequer included a pair of otherwise humble Louis XIII dining chairs upholstered with two simple tapestry designs supplied to the necessary dimensions by Picasso in 1959. Thought to be the only chairs made to the design, they were embroidered by Pellequin’s wife Francine.

The two original sketches of a pensive face and a jolly creature with horns were individually estimated at €60,000-€90,000 ($65,090-$97,635), and each hammered at the low estimate and sold for €78,000 ($84,615) with buyer’s premium. Although both were signed and dedicated on the verso, only the Indian ink outline had been done by Picasso, with the colors added later in pencil by another hand (probably Francine Pellequer herself when choosing her palette).
However, the chairs, estimated at €4,000-€6,000 ($4,340-$6,510), found a far more enthusiastic response, together hammering for €162,000 and selling for €210,600 ($228,465) with buyer’s premium. The sale was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.

BRUSSELS — Paris-based art auction house Piasa has announced a major single-artist sale titled Pol Bury, Beyond Movement, slated for Wednesday, January 24 at La Patinoire Royale, Galerie Valerie Bach in Brussels, Belgium. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Born in Belgium, Bury (1922-2005) began his artistic career as a Surrealist painter, but was profoundly influenced by an Alexander Calder exhibition in 1952. He immediately shifted his focus to kinetic sculpture, with his first exhibition in 1955 in Paris titled Le Movement. He became associated with the ZERO group of artists started in Germany by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, described by the latter as “a zone of silence and of pure possibilities for a new beginning.”

Geometry was a guiding vision in all of Bury’s work, as is seen in the Piasa sale tellingly named “Beyond Movement.” The collection is focused on both Bury’s static and moving works and represents a clear cross-section of his oeuvre, much of it consigned by his widow, Velma Bury.

Ironically, the highest-estimated lot in the sale isn’t a work by Bury, but rather of him — Souvenirs, portrait de Pol Bury is dated circa 1967 and is by Alina Szapocznikow (1926-1973). It features Bury’s image on a object made of polyester resin, fiberglass, newspaper, a gelatin silver print and cotton gauze. It is described as “unique” and carries an estimate of €8,000-€12,000 ($8,760-$13,150).

48 boules sur un escalier en perspective (48 balls on a staircase in perspective) is a 1997 work by Bury made of tinted wood, cork and an electrical motor. It is signed, dated and titled on the back and is estimated at €6,000-€8,000 ($6,575-$8,760).

Dated August 2005, one month before his passing, is Girouettes (Weathervanes), a group of six cut PVC pieces on steel feet. Twice exhibited in Belgium, first in 2010 and later in 2017 at La Patinoire Royale, the lot is estimated at €6,000-€8,000 ($6,575-$8,760).

A study model for Capteurs de Ciel (La Louviere), a public art installation by Bury in Brussels, is dated 2004 and is made of wood, stainless steel and an electric motor. As with the earlier items, the lot is estimated at €6,000-€8,000 ($6,575-$8,760).

Cercle sur un triangle (Circle on a triangle) is a 1978 kinetic work by Bury and also comes from his wife’s collection. Made of copper and steel, it is estimated at €4,000-€6,000 ($4,380-$6,575).

PARIS — George Nakashima furniture was the big winner in the three-sale, intra-day event at Piasa November 8. The day consisted of After Alexander Calder 53/100, Arts and Crafts – Made in America, and American Design. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

At just 15 lots, After Alexander Calder was a micro-sale entirely comprised of Calder tapestries, each numbered 53/100. The top earner was Doll – no. 53/100, which hammered at €62,000 ($87,427 with buyer’s premium).

The Arts and Crafts – Made in America sale was a 34-lot affair packed with fine examples of the early 20th-century design movement, split between the various Stickley brothers and Charles Limbert (1854-1923). Top-lot honors went to Limbert for his no. 243 oak bench dating to 1902. It hammered for €7,000 ($9,870 with buyer’s premium).

The third session, the 148-lot American Design sale, was dominated by 28 lots of George Nakashima furniture. The leader of the sale was a Minguren II dining table bearing the magical modifier “Special Order” — in this case, for a couple in Illinois in 1982. It hammered at €145,000 ($204,446 with buyer’s premium), just south of its top estimate.

Other victorious lots included a double chest of drawers (€38,000, or $53,584 with buyer’s premium) and a walnut and pandanus Special Order cabinet from 1958, accompanied by its original order slip (€35,000, or $49,354 with buyer’s premium).

BRUSSELS — An important private collection of 46 master works in sculpture, ceramics and art head to market at Piasa in Brussels, Belgium on Monday, November 20. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Founder of the art brut movement, Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) focused on a humanistic approach to art and avoided traditional approaches to beauty. Passe cortège (La Procession) is a 1965 oil on canvas that has been exhibited numerous times and has a fully documented ownership chain to the present collection. It is one of the sale’s top estimated lots, at €1 million-€1.5 million ($1 million-$1.5 million).

Father of European lyrical abstraction, Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) built a wealthy clientele for his art by working for United States Lines, a passenger ship company, in his home town of Le Havre, France. In assisting and greeting arriving elite passengers, he would ultimately meet Salvador Dali, among many others. La Bataille des Éperons d’or (The Battle of the Golden Spurs) is a 1957 work featuring gold leaf. The work was widely exhibited beginning in 1959 and has had only three owners to date. The oil on canvas is estimated at €1.2 million-€1.8 million ($1.2 million-$1.9 million).

The sale includes two bronze sculptures by Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916), the talented but tragically doomed Italian artist who would take his life at age 31 as a result of depression brought on by his World War I experiences. Like his famous brother Ettore, founder of Bugatti motor cars, Rembrandt had a unique gift, manifested in his sculptures turned to bronzes. Lionne dévorant from around 1904 is estimated at €200,000-€300,000 ($212,900-$319,400), and the 1906 bronze Femme nue assise se coiffant is estimated at €100,000-€150,000 ($106,400-$159,700).

A selection of 17 Picasso works, primarily ceramics, are also included from the private collection. Vase aztèque aux quatre visages from 1957 is the top-estimated Picasso lot at €80,000-€100,000 ($85,100-$106,400).

PARIS — A breathtaking collection of 27 George Nakashima originals — including numerous special orders — takes center stage at Piasa’s American Design sale, scheduled for Wednesday, November 8. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Respected globally, George Nakashima (1905-1990) was an American woodworker, architect, and furniture maker regarded as a leader in the American craft movement. Though his family continues to run his business, examples created during George’s lifetime command the highest prices in the aftermarket — particularly special orders from customers, which can vary from the standard Nakashima designs.

Created two years before Nakashima’s passing is a 1988 special-order Minguren II dining table in walnut. Inscribed Thomas beneath the tabletop, the 80in-long table is the top overall lot in the sale and is estimated at €120,000-€150,000 ($126,835-$158,543).

In keeping with the American Design theme, Piasa has included four Harry Bertoia designs spanning a few areas of art he explored during his lifetime. The sale includes two items from the Bush series, metallic sculptures designed to resemble flora. This item, described as a “unique piece,” dates to 1972 and is made of bronze and copper. It is estimated at €70,000-€90,000 ($73,986-$95,125).

Philip Lloyd Powell (1919-2008) spent most of his career in relative obscurity, fashioning beautiful furniture prized by collectors today, though he never had any formal training. This 8ft-long dining table carries all the Powell hallmarks, including flowing design and stunning materials (in this case, walnut and slate). It is estimated at €40,000-€60,000 ($42,278-$63,417).

A beautiful wall mirror from Wendell Castle (1932-2018) is another marquee lot. With sculpted walnut made using Castle’s stacked lamination technique (numerous layers of wood bonded together, then fashioned into the final design), the piece is estimated at €25,000-€35,000 ($26,423-$36,993).

Piasa has two additional sales slated for the same date — November 8 — also in Paris.

They include After Alexander Calder – 53/100, a 15-lot micro-sale with works inspired by the look of Calder. All lots are estimated at €15,000-€20,000 ($15,888-$21,185).

The other is Arts and Crafts – Made in America, a sale featuring furniture by Gustav Stickley, the Stickley Brothers and Charles P. Limbert, with 34 lots in all.

PARIS — Founded in 1990, Annmaris Auctions is a Finnish auction house specializing in Nordic home furnishings. On September 13, Annmaris partnered with Paris-based Piasa to present a compelling 174-lot collection of home furnishings that reflect the Nordic design ethos. Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976) was a prominent Finnish architect and designer. His furniture remains very collectible to this day, and it looks extraordinarily contemporary despite being designed decades ago. An Alvar Aalto model no. 44 set of armchairs originally designed in 1932 were estimated at €25,000-€35,000 ($26,500-$37,100), but ultimately hammered at €65,000 ($69,274, or $90,056 with buyer’s premium).

Another Alvar Aalto lot of note was a model no. 41 armchair with a design also dating to 1932 that could easily fit into any setting today. Named the Paimio, it was estimated at €20,000-€30,000 but soared to €28,000 ($29,841, or $38,793 with buyer’s premium).

Paavo Tynell was one of the most important designers of light fixtures in the 20th century. Based in Finland, Tynell’s designs were copied worldwide, so great was his influence. Two of his light fixtures sold above their estimates: a 1946-design table lamp for €57,000 ($60,748 or $78,972 with buyer’s premium), and a pair of model no. 5762 Chinese Hat floor lamps for €38,000 ($40,499 or $52,648 with buyer’s premium).

PARIS — Three of the 20th century’s most respected — and collected — designers are featured in Piasa’s Art + Design auction on Wednesday, September 20. The 155-lot catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The top lot in the sale comes from the creative genius of Harry Bertoia (1915-1978). His Willow Sculpture from 1968 is made from stainless steel and was created as a commission by the First National Bank of Seattle. The lot comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Harry Bertoia Foundation and is estimated at €50,000-€70,000 ($54,000-$75,600).

Best known for his architecture throughout America, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was “focused on the complete integration of the house — site and structure, interior and exterior, furniture, ornament and architecture, every element of the design was connected,” according to his namesake trust’s website.

Piasa’s sale has six Wright items, topped by the Price Tower console, estimated at €35,000-€45,000 ($37,800-$48,600). Wright’s Day Bed is another example of his fine eye for design, estimated at €15,000-€20,000 ($16,200-$21,600).

George Nakashima (1905-1990) was a visionary furniture designer whose ethic was a reaction to the modernism trend of the postwar period. The auction has five Nakashima lots, including a special-order cherry wood Trestle dining table from 1977. It carries an estimate of €30,000-€40,000 ($32,400-$43,200).

PIASA to auction NFT for international journalists charity Oct. 19

PARIS – In October, a collector’s edition of France’s favorite news brand, 20 Minutes, will appear as an NFT (non-fungible token). For the first time in France, a unique digital copy of a newspaper title will be sold during a charity auction organized in October by the PIASA auction house for the benefit of the International Federation of Journalists (Federation internationale des journalistes, or FIJ). It carries an estimate of €2,000-€3,000. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
