CHICAGO — Wright and Toomey & Co. will launch the inaugural Elevated: Art Via Chicago sale on Friday, February 23. It features 20th-century art from important Chicago collections with an emphasis on artists and movements that have shaped the Chicago art world during the last 100 years, such as the Chicago Imagists, Hairy Who?, Monster Roster, and Chicago Modernists. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The auction lineup is led by Chicago Bohemian surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977), who is represented by three originals. The 1954 oil-on-Masonite Sunset offers classic themes found in all her works: dark, foreboding and barren landscape; a female figure (usually the artist); and some occult-like inclusion — in this case, an owl. The painting is estimated at $70,000-$90,000.

Ed Paschke (1939-2004) lived most of his life in Chicago, and enjoyed a remarkably varied and successful career, even creating racy cartoons for Playboy Magazine. The sale includes four of his works, with Origin clocking in at $20,000-$30,000. Featuring Paschke’s trademark precision-rendered illustrations, the 1995 oil on linen was purchased directly from the artist by the consignor.

Born in Chicago to Swedish immigrant parents, Gladys Nilsson (b. 1940-) was a member of the Hairy Who? group of Chicago Imagists that gained prominence in the late 1960s. Wright has four of her works in the Elevated sale. A. Artyst is a 1987 watercolor on paper with a collection of quirky characters surrounding the central figure. It’s estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

Margo Hoff (1910-2008) created Dream of Flying early in her art career, in 1950. The eerie, floating body over the landscape is an oil on Masonite and measures 39.375 by 19.375in. It is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

CHICAGO — The Lee and Susan Stahl collection of American and English art pottery came to auction January 17 at Toomey & Co. and produced some noteworthy results, showing that once again, quality is the ultimate price-determining factor when any item crosses the block. The Stahls focused on exceptional examples throughout their collection, and Toomey bidders responded appropriately. The sale’s leader was expected to do well, but not necessarily claim top-lot honors: A Roseville Pottery Futura flying saucer console set. It dated to 1928, had five total pieces, is rarely found complete, and almost never appears in this condition. Estimated at $2,000-$3,000, bidders took the set to an amazing $32,000 ($41,920 with buyer’s premium).

The sale’s highest-estimated lot was the 1928 Roseville Pottery Futura Tank vase (model no. 412-9), which was assigned a range of $8,000-$10,000. Bidders doubled the high estimate, pushing it to $20,000 ($26,200 with buyer’s premium).

An example of Newcomb College pottery made it to the sale’s top tier of results. This Mazie Teresa Ryan vase from 1906 with a stylized chrysanthemum design earned $9,000 ($11,790 with buyer’s premium), just above the $7,000 high estimate.

Always a crowd favorite, the Weller dancing frogs garden ornament from 1930 outperformed, bringing $9,000 ($11,790 with buyer’s premium), nearly doubling the high estimate.

And out of left field came yet another Roseville item — this time, a sunflower umbrella stand with a beautiful glaze. Estimated at $1,000-$1,500, bidders fought tooth and nail between the floor and a LiveAuctioneers bidder, with the former finally winning out at a stunning $8,500 ($11,135 with buyer’s premium) — nearly six times the high estimate.

CHICAGO — Lee and Susan Stahl are collectors of early 20th-century American and English art pottery, and have amassed an amazing collection in impeccable condition. More than 220 examples from this collection will come to market on Wednesday, January 17 at Toomey & Co. featuring vases, bowls, tableware, landscapes, sculpture, and more. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

One of the Stahl collection’s stars is a Roseville Pottery tank vase, designed by Frank Ferrell (1878-1961), one of the Zanesville, Ohio company’s leading talents. Reflecting the Art Deco period in which the vase was released, its Egyptian-like geometry almost defies explanation, making it a top collector favorite today. Known as Model 412-9, the crystalline-glazed earthenware dates to 1928 and is estimated at $8,000-$10,000.

Now part of Tulane University in New Orleans, Newcomb College was founded through a grant from Josephine Louise Newcomb in memory of her beloved daughter, Harriott Sophie Newcomb, who died at 15 of diphtheria. The goal was to create an environment for women to learn and acquire practical skills, including industrial arts such as pottery. From that art program came what is now known as Newcomb College Pottery, and one of its stars was a young woman named Sabina Wells, a native of Charleston, South Carolina. This 1904 vase with anemones is an example of her work, and it is the sale’s top lot at $10,000-$15,000.

Mazie Teresa Ryan was another acclaimed Newcomb potter working in the same period as Wells. Dated to 1906, this vase with stylized chrysanthemums is made of glazed earthenware, stands 8.6in in height and has NC AY26 M T Ryan marked to its base. It carries a $5,000-$7,000 estimate.

Cincinnati’s acclaimed Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 and survived until 1967, though a revival of the brand began in 2004. Lenore Asbury (1886-1933) was a lifelong Rookwood employee, having originally attended Cincinnati Art Academy. She worked in a number of media, including vases, but she also excelled at glazed ceramic plaques. Twilight Landscape is a 9 by 12in vellum plaque, is signed LA, and has an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Weller Pottery began in 1872 with a log cabin and a beehive kiln, but grew to become the nation’s biggest pottery concern by 1905. With success came more mass production, such as this Dancing Frogs garden ornament dating to 1930. Standing 16.5in in height, the piece is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

CHICAGO — Toomey & Co.‘s Early 20th Century Design sale on December 12 was keystoned by selections from the Frank Lloyd Wright collection of Domino’s Pizza founder Thomas Monaghan. A longtime admirer of Wright’s contributions to American design and culture, Monaghan founded The National Center for the Study of Frank Lloyd Wright, so the items he consigned were considered extremely choice selections for bidders.

As anticipated, all the Wright lots did well, though surprisingly, the top seller wasn’t the product of the famed architect at all. Rather, it was a set of glass and film negatives mostly created by Henry Fuermann & Sons, Wright’s photographer of choice to document his works. Totaling 222 pieces in all, the lot received nearly two dozen bids before hammering at $20,000 ($26,200 with buyer’s premium).

The sale’s absolute top lot was a majestic vitrine by Koloman Moser. Made in Austria around 1904, the unit was fashioned from burl wood, oak, mixed wood inlay, mother-of-pearl, mirrored glass, glass, silver and nickel. Estimated at $10,000-$15,000, it sold for $75,000 ($98,250 with buyer’s premium).

The auction included seven brilliant woodcut prints by the master of the medium, Gustave Baumann (1881-1971). The top seller was, as expected, Apple Blossoms from 1917. Signed by the artist, it was estimated at $5,000-$7,000 but sold for $15,000 ($19,650 with buyer’s premium).

Roycroft movement founder Elbert Hubbard was famously pro-temperance, even being quoted in local publications on how “dry” towns were always more prosperous: “I am sure that no-license [no liquor sales allowed] in East Aurora has been a big benefit to the Roycroft Shop. The boys have had more sleep, less liquor, more exercise and as a consequence have been better fitted to do good work. Many Roycroft boys have bank accounts now who never had before. And some of those who did have accounts have bigger balances.”

That comment makes the existence of this Roycroft cellarette all the more interesting. Designed as a small bar or wine storage unit, the example presented at Toomey was missing its bottle rack but was otherwise complete and original, and included its key. Estimated at $10,000-$15,000, the cellarette hammered at $26,000 ($34,060 with buyer’s premium).

CHICAGO – By the late 1920s, some members of the New Hope colony of artists in Pennsylvania were growing restless. Believing Impressionism had reached a dead end, and enthused by the avant garde in Europe, they began to consider the possibilities of abstraction. Their champion was Charles Frederic Ramsey (1875-1951) – the founder of the New Hope Modernists group that by 1932 had become The Independents.

The Black Spiral, a 20 by 16in study of geometric forms in oil on board, is typical of the paintings he was producing in the 1930s. It was offered at the Toomey & Co. auction on October 10 as one of close to 100 works from the estate of Angela Gross Folk. Other pictures from the estate had been sold at Freeman’s in Philadelphia in a select sale earlier this year.

Ramsey’s work commands relatively modest prices compared to other bigger names from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. This painting, which for many years stayed with the artist’s family, was bought by Folk from the Roy Pedersen Gallery of Lambertville, New Jersey. It had formed part of the exhibition Charles F. Ramsey: Father of New Hope Modernism held in 2003 at the Allentown Art Museum. It hammered for $9,000 ($11,790 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $6,000-$8,000.

The top lot overall was Johnson Street, a watercolor by Henry Martin Gasser (1909-1981) that hammered for $14,000 ($18,340 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $1,000-$1,500. Gasser was born in Newark, New Jersey and found his artistic inspiration in the everyday life of his backyard. Gasser once said, “The search for a picturesque or readymade landscape, comprising ideal color, composition, and subject matter often actually results in an unexciting dull picture.”

Dated circa 1940, Johnstown Street had formed part of the exhibition Henry Gasser: Beyond City Limits held at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio in 2004.

Youngstown itself was the favored subject of Clyde Singer (1908-1999), the American Regionalist painter who held a directorship at the Butler from 1940 until his death in 1999. His 1961 oil-on-board East Federal, depicting the daily goings-on at the East Federal Street Fresh Market, proved particularly popular and hammered for $9,500 ($12,445 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $2,000-$3,000.

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. — Highlights from the lifetime collection of American antiques and collectibles experts Ralph and Terry Kovel will come to market at Rago and Toomey & Co. on Wednesday, November 1. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The 87-lot sale offers insight into the personal tastes of the Kovels, nationally known for their syndicated weekly newspaper column, syndicated television show and (since the 1960s) their series of price guides designed to help aspiring collectors buy right. Their folksy writing style carried over when they made the jump to television, and viewers made their show one of the most-watched programs of its type for years.

Ralph passed away in 2008 from complications of a broken hip, but Terry and her daughter Kim continue to keep the Kovels empire moving forward as part of a larger firm.

With 33 items in the auction, Ralph and Terry were clearly fans of George E. Ohr (1857-1918), the “mad potter of Biloxi,” whose work ranged from somewhat traditional to abstract and Expressionistic long before such artistic schools were in vogue, particularly in ceramics. Ohr died largely unknown, but the Kovels became his champion, and their extensive Ohr collection demonstrates his design genius. This glazed earthenware vase, dated to 1897-1900, stands 8.75in in height and features a pink glaze with sponged-on cobalt, orange, and raspberry glazes. It is estimated at $35,000-$45,000.

Three works by French Realist Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) are also included in the sale. Bonheur, both a painter and sculptor, worked in very fine realism and often at grand scale, with some paintings, such as The Horse Fair from 1855, measuring 8 by 16ft.

Much smaller but just as detailed is Taureau, a circa-1860 full-frontal view of a bull and his mighty horns. Measuring 21.25 by 16.75in, Taureau is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

R. W. Martin & Brothers, better known as “the Martin Brothers,” operated a pottery concern in London from 1873-1914. Their best-known line of pottery, known as “Wally Birds,” feature anthropomorphic designs with grinning fowl whose heads may be removed for storing pipe tobacco. Immensely popular at the time, Martinware remains a leading collectible today. The Kovels cherished this two-faced pitcher featuring impish grins on both sides. Dated 1901 and clearly signed “R. W. Martin & Bros.,” the salt-glazed stoneware jug in apparently immaculate original condition is estimated at $4,500-$6,500.

CHICAGO – Toomey & Co,’s August 23 sale called Roycroft: Life in Abundance, the Collection of Richard Blacher, returned abundantly strong results. The auction, a 344-lot celebration of the work and legacy of the Roycroft community, founded in 1894 by ex-soap salesman Elbert Hubbard, was a clear success, with several lots markedly outperforming their estimates. Absentee and Internet live bidding was facilitated through LiveAuctioneers.

Inspired by the ethos of Arts & Crafts movement legend William Morris, Hubbard started the Roycroft press in East Aurora, New York to self-publish his books after the example of Morris’s Kelmscott Press. The name came from that of the British 17th-century printers Samuel and Thomas Roycroft, and also Hubbard’s belief that ‘roycroft’ meant ‘king’s craft’ in French.

Rechristening himself Fra Elbertus, the charismatic self-described anarchist and socialist drew hordes of talented people into his orbit, who settled in East Aurora. Their artisanship ranged across several categories that were represented in the Toomey & Co. sale.

In the realm of furniture, a circa-1905 model 084 variant bookcase from Hubbard’s own collection and with notarized letters of provenance from his estate to reinforce the connection, hammered for $13,000 and sold for $17,030 with buyer’s premium.

The standout in the lighting category was a circa-1925 model 905 Roycroft table lamp, its leaded slag glass and copper shade designed by Dard Hunter and its patinated and hand-wrought copper base attributed to Victor Toothaker. It hammered for $14,000 and sold for $18,340 with buyer’s premium.

A charming Roycroft work of decorative arts is a circa-1910 oak and iron sign that reads ‘A Deer Hunter is a Miserable Thing.’ It hammered for $10,000 and sold for $13,100 with buyer’s premium.

Several of the lots of books were hotly contested by bidders, but the clear winner was An Appreciation of Thomas W. Lawson, for the Citizens of Albert Lea and having a Roycroft presentation box. Made in 1905, it sported a binding by Louis Kinder, landscapes by Alexis Fournier, and was designed, hand-calligraphed and hand-illuminated by Dard Hunter. It hammered for $30,000 and sold for $39,300 with buyer’s premium.

Hubbard’s endeavor expanded from a press to a full-fledged art colony. At its peak in 1910, Roycroft boasted more than 500 people and included 14 buildings. This complex, now known as the Roycroft campus, became a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

After Hubbard and his wife died aboard the RMS Lusitania, which was torpedoed by German forces off the coast of Ireland in May 1915, the Roycroft community slowly began to diminish. His sons managed to keep the business going until 1938. As the Toomey & Co. sale demonstrated, the Roycroft name has only grown in esteem.

CHICAGO – Rago and Toomey & Co. announce “Roycroft: Life in Abundance, The Collection of Richard Blacher,” a sale to be held at Toomey’s Chicago gallery on Wednesday, August 23. Founded in East Aurora, New York by salesman Elbert Hubbard in late 1894, the Roycroft reformist community — whose members were known as Roycrofters — became a hub for the production of texts, decorative arts, furniture, lighting, metalwork, and more in the burgeoning Arts & Crafts tradition.

This will be a two-part sale, with the second event on a future date to be announced.

Roycroft collector Richard Blacher’s wide range of historical objects from this extraordinary community are featured in the sale. The collection includes numerous books, light fixtures, bookends, jewelry, ephemera, and other accoutrements.

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. – Rago and Toomey & Co. will offer more than 100 works in an auction dedicated to Edward Penfield: American Illustrator on Thursday, May 18.
