COLOMBIA, Mo. – A first edition copy of The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S Grant will be offered at Schilb Antiquarian Rare Books on Sunday, September 24. Although estimated at $1,500-$3,000, all books in the auction are offered without reserve. Bidding is available via LiveAuctioneers.

Grant’s memoirs were to be his last act. The Union Army general wrote the two volumes as he was fighting throat cancer and financial ruin, knowing that the proceeds would ensure his wife a comfortable life after he passed away. He hoped, too, that the contents would answer his critics and make a persuasive case for his actions on the battlefield.

Acclaimed by writers as diverse as Mark Twain and Gertrude Stein, it includes many lines that have become famous for their directness and clarity. “The art of war,” said Grant, “is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can and keep moving on.”

Grant’s efforts yielded advance sales of 350,000 two-volume sets. The finished product was a lavish affair, with its gilt medallion to the binding and numerous facsimile letters and correspondence bound into the second volume. Grant’s printed signature following the dedication read simply: These volumes are dedicated to the American Soldier and Sailor. US.Grant, New York City, May 23rd, 1885. He died five days later.

Also estimated at $1,500-$3,000 is a first French edition copy of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. The author’s most famous work, since transformed into film, theater and opera, was first printed in Brussels on March 31, 1862 and then in Paris three days later. Such was the praise for the novel that the first authorized English-language version arrived soon afterwards. Translated by Lascelles Wraxall, it was available in the UK and the US by October 1862.
