Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A fine axe head cast from copper, that may have been intended for ceremonial use. The axe features a long socketing shaft that is set at a ninety-degree angle from the blade. The blade flares outward and curves downward dramatically. Most striking is a snake in relief slithering its way up the hafting socket! The serpent’s nose touches the exterior rim of the socket. Areas of the original bronze color are visible through the thick layers of green and brown patina. A wonderful example! Size: 4" L x .875" W x 2.3" H (10.2 cm x 2.2 cm x 5.8 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
