Civil War Letter With Reconstruction Content
Three page autograph letter signed of a bifolium, 5.5" x 8.25". Dated "January 25, 1871". Minor separations along the top and bottom of the vertical fold, else near fine.Â
A letter with fantastic content during the period of reconstruction post Civil War. Shown in part below:
" was very sick after I met you, I was unable to write, or visit you, when I recovered sufficiently, I was busy preparing to come South that I had no time, as our journey was deferred several weeks on account of my illness.... It was so cold on the Sound that the water froze in my state room, & at Richmond I suffered not withstanding my grate was as full of coal as it would hold. When we arrived at Savannah the weather was more mild but we were told it was cold in Florida so we concluded not to go. It is very dreary riding through the states except in the cities & even there, the lack of energy & enterprise is seen and felt. The people acknowledge they are deficient to the Yanks as they call us. It is sad to see how ignorant they are of agriculture .. so many farms utterly neglected or poorly cultivated.. and the poor coloured man cheated out of a whole years wages simply because he would not vote to please his employers...."
