Description
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA ATTRIBUTED DECORATED STONEWARE JAR WITH UNIDENTIFIED STAMP, salt-glazed, "1" gallon capacity mark, semi-ovoid form with incised shoulder ring, arched, extruded handles, and high collar with plain, flat-top rim. Stamped "SALAMANDER" along the lower edge at base, greenish-brown-slip glazed interior. Brushed cobalt dropped feather decoration repeated on both sides at shoulder, additional cobalt at handle terminals. Probably David Parr Jr. (1819-1882), or John L. Parr operating the Richmond Pottery Co. (after 1866-1890). Circa 1860. 9 1/2" H, 6 5/8" D rim.
Very good condition, light T-shape hairline from medial body to center of base, number of small chips to outer edge of rim.
