Description
George Custer Signed CDV, Possibly the Finest Known!
Measuring 2.5" x 4", Washington, D.C., dated 1865. Inscribed and signed "Yours Truly GA Custer Bt Maj Genl U.S.A." A side profile image of Custer, dressed in his uniform and wearing his signature wide-brimmed hat. We feel only 2 comparable signed photos have sold at auction. In Cowan's 2005 one sold for $23,000, and in Spink 2010 for over $27,000, both in a much weaker market. The image was taken by Mathew Brady and entered into Congress in 1865. With a Brady backstamp on verso. Light foxing at the lower half of the image. Slightly bumped corners. Very fine, boldly signed.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
