Needlework Sampler
Stoneham, MA 1805
Eliza worked this very graphic and visually pleasing sampler featuring multiple alphabets, a verse about the invention of letters to make words, a large three-story house bordered by triangular trees, dogs, and a three-sided floral border.
"The noble art to Cadmus owes its rise/ Of painting words and speaking to the eyes/ He first in wondrous magick fetters boud/ The airy voice and stopp'd the flying sound/ The various figures by his pencil wrought/ Gave colour form and body to the thought". And it is inscribed: "ELIZA GREEN/ aged 10 yr October 1805/ Stoneham."
Silk on green linsey woolsey; 16" x 23 1/2".
Condition: There are four scattered small holes in the background fabric that are backed with a matching color so they are not noticeable and dark overstitching on four letters in one of the alphabets.
There are two Eliza Green's born in Stoneham that could possibly be the maker, genealogies of both accompany this sampler.
Provenance: Dan and Marty Campanelli, who did the extensive research that accompanies this sampler.
