Description
This graphically stunning Haverhill, MA, sampler was worked in 1819 by 14 year old Olivia Hoyt as a memorial to her father who was a shipwright and drowned in 1807 with five other persons in the Merrimac River when she was only two years old. The solidly stitched three sided border features complex geographic designs and across the top are seven delicately embroidered trees. Alphabets, numerals, a verse, and an oval solidly stitched scene with two inscribed monuments complete the sampler. The monuments are inscribed; WROUGHT BY/ OLIVIA HOYT AG 14/ 1819 AND TO THE/ MEMORY OF/ WM HOYT/ DIED MAY 20 187 (1807). Olivia married John Waldo of Orange Co, VT and they had two children. In 1880 she was living with her daughter and son-in-law James Oliver Perry Burnside in Washington, DC. Olivia died on September 6, 1880 and is buried at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington. Silk on linen; 24 x 21.75 inches framed.
