Description
Edwin M. Stanton Signed Envelope, Likely War-Dated

Measuring 5.75" x 3.5", Washington, D.C., illegible date [possibly January 1862]. A War Department envelope, marked "Official Business" and signed "Edwin M. Stanton." Addressed to Mr. Samuel P. Dolt in Hartford, Connecticut. Mounted to a small backing sheet, with expected edge wear and soiling. Pencil notations on verso, very fine.

Edwin Stanton (1814-1869) served as Secretary of War under President Lincoln from 1862 to 1868. He organized the manhunt for Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, and remained as Secretary of War under President Johnson during the first years of Reconstruction. It was Johnson's attempt to fire Stanton that ultimately led to Johnson's impeachment.
