Abraham Lincoln & Edwin M. Stanton Signed War-Dated Military Appointment

1p partially printed and partially handwritten war-dated document on vellum signed by 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) as "Abraham Lincoln" at lower right, and by U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton (1814-1869) as "Edwin M Stanton" at lower center. Issued from Washington, D.C. on February 26, 1863. An embossed paper seal is located at upper left, and the document is handsomely illustrated with two large printed patriotic images. Docketed at upper left. Expected folds throughout, including horizontal folds just touching the signatures. Isolated areas of foxing and edge darkening. The handwriting is a little faded but the signatures are bold. Else very good to near fine. Approximately 14.5" x 19".

President Lincoln and Secretary of War Stanton authorized the appointment of Anson L. Brewer to the rank of Additional Paymaster. Public records indicate that Brewer, an Ohioan, survived the Civil War but later died in a Mississippi steamboat explosion while undertaking his duties as paymaster in early 1866.
