Description
Supplementary warp ikat woven women's ceremonial skirt (Lau Pahikung) with repeating figures holding parasols and flanked by plants, animals and geometric figures, and having pink beadwork snakes with red eyes and other beaded details. Still in tubular skirt form. Vintage or older. Approx. 54" x 29" (if seam were opened, the flat textile would be approx. 54" x 58".) Acquired in the 1970s-1980 by the original owner, who purchased a number of antique Indonesian textiles from Anita E. Spertus and Robert J. Holmgren, authors of "Early Indonesian Textiles from Three Island Cultures", published 1989 in conjunction with the exhibit "Early Indonesian Textiles from Three Island Cultures" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.Provenance: Estate of Cayce Odom of Charlottesville, VA.
