Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Maya, ca. 1000 BCE to 800 CE; West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE; Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, Carretas, Casas Grandes, ca. 1060 to 1340 CE. A collection of 4 Pre-Columbian vessels, including a Jalisco figural jar, a Maya blackware bowl, a Colima gourd shaped jar, and a Casas Grandes polychrome vessel. The cargador ("carrier" in Spanish) pottery figure sits upright with arms upraised and resting on the nose, a flared rim above leading into the hollow interior. The lovely, petite blackware ceramic bowl has a smooth rim and a ribbed, rounded lower body with root marks. The unusual double-built, round-bottomed formed vessel likely represents a calabash gourd, with linear resist painted motifs across the base and sides. Last is the polychrome storage jar with strap handles to the sides of the rim, and a white slipped and red / black painted interlocking geometric forms across the surface. Size of polychrome vessel: 7" Diameter x 5.5" H (17.8 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000
