Description
Eugene Field ALS "in regard to a cure for stammering..."
1p, measuring 7.5" x 9.75", Amherst, dated August 1, 1870. Signed "Eugene Field" and addressed to Simon Fisher Esq. in Vermont, concerning a referral for a patient who suffers from stammering. Retaining the original hand-addressed envelope. The letter has flattened mail folds with soiling marks. Boldly signed. Expected wear to the envelope. Letter reading in full:
"A young man by the name of Watkiss has applied to me for information in regard to a cure for stammering. I have recommended your treatment to him, and he will write you at once. He is about twenty years of age and is the son of well-to-do parents. I have told him that you would probably make a charge of $50 or $100, for the cure, and about $6 per week for board. I do not know your regular prices, but as he was anxious to obtain information, I told him as best I could. Do not hesitate to charge him whatever you think your time and trouble worth. I returned to Amhurst today but shall probably revisit Vermont ere long…"
Eugene Field (1850-1895) was raised by his aunt in Amhurst, Massachusetts, following the death of his mother in 1856. He attended Williams College, but was an inattentive student and dropped out after less than a year when his father died. In order to make a living, he began his career as a newspaper journalist in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1875. He worked for various newspapers in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver, before moving to Chicago in 1883 to work for the Chicago Daily News. Field began publishing poetry in 1879 and became famous for his children's poetry, as well as several short stories and humorous essays.
