Item Details
Description
Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to early 2nd century CE. A mold-formed cup or jar of a squat form that is shaped from translucent glass of a nearly colorless hue. The vessel features a concave base with a rough pontil scar, a bell-shaped body with tapered walls, and a thick rim with a ground lip for comfortability when placing it to one's mouth. A pattern-molded ring of glass stretches around the circumference of the lower neck and creates a personalized presentation and perhaps a raised surface for gripping. Areas of fabulous rainbow-hued iridescence envelop the entire composition! Size: 2.75" W x 2.8" H (7 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

#170174
Condition
Minor abrasions and weathering film, with encrustations, and light micro-bubbling within glass matrix, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Wonderful iridescence throughout!
