Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Siberia, Pleistocene Epoch, ca. 1.2 million to 24,000 years ago. This is a wonderfully preserved example of a fossilized tooth from the prehistoric woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) with the characteristic hollowed cavities that form what is often described as a "smiling face." Lengthy and thick roots in hues of brown and black support the molar and once anchored this tooth to the jaw. The inner dentine a deeper caramel brown and the enamel is a light gray hue, visible on the outer edge and surrounding and highlighting the 3 natural cavities that inspired the scientific name of these rhinos, as Coelodonta antiquitatis that translates to "ancient hollow tooth." Size: 2.75" L x 2" W x 2.5" H (7 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.4 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
