Northeastern Asia, Russia, Siberia, Yakut, Pleistocene, ca. 2 million to 10,000 years ago. This is a stunning piece of fossilized tusk from a juvenile woolly mammoth with the tip intact! The tusk has a gently curved profile that tapers towards the thick tip. The yellow-white enamel has developed deep umber brown striations as well as a grayish hue due to the process of mineralization - and the surface has been lightly polished to highlight this lovely coloration. While notably smaller than its adult counterparts, intact tusks from juvenile mammoths are far more uncommon find! The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is an iconic species of the Ice Age, and early humans stalked and hunted these mammals before their extinction. Folk-memories of megafauna persisted into more recent times, and the Inuit had a legendary creature known as the "kilivfaq," based on the occasional finds of massive tusks and even preserved mammoth bodies in the permafrost.
