Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Nepal or Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This is a lovely and interesting hand-carved wooden shrine panel depicting Amitabha Buddha shrines in each corner, 3 Buddha or bodhisattva figures on pedestals, and other mythical beings and deities in low and high relief across the surface. The thick panel is nearly black with patina, and the figures are soft, but some details such as pedestals, and heads and general outline of the figures and arches are present. At the center is a large wrathful deity or demon, and below is a makara or feline creature. The deities are worn with age and use- likely were covered in metal work as some high pointed areas have traces of brass- brass or copper sheet would be placed over the figures then hammered to press the image into the surface. These votive plaques or shrines are known as tsa-tsa which are usually made of pottery pressed into hollow molds. This wood example is unique! Size: 9.5" L x 0.75" W x 11.25" H (24.1 cm x 1.9 cm x 28.6 cm)
