Oliver Wolcott Jr. Two Signed Connecticut Comptroller Office Receipts
Two Connecticut Comptroller receipts signed "Oliv: Wolcott Jr." as Comptroller. The first, measuring 7" x 4", Hartford, Connecticut, dated February 14, 1789, is numbered 689 and awards 10 shillings to Samuel Penfield. The second, measuring 6.75" x 3.5", Hartford, Connecticut, dated May 18, 1789, is numbered 2819 and awards 10 shillings to Samuel W. Pomeroy. Both with uneven edges, light toning and ink spots. Each certificate has a large circular cancellation punch through the center, affecting a small part of Wolcott's signature. Both signatures are large and bold.
Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the second United States Secretary of the Treasury, a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit, and the 24th Governor of Connecticut. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, Wolcott served in the Continental Army from 1777 to 1779, during the American Revolutionary War, then graduated from Yale University in 1778 and studied law in 1781. He became clerk of the Connecticut Committee on Pay-Table from 1781 to 1782, then continued as a member of the Connecticut Committee on Pay-Table from 1782 to 1784. He went on to serve as the second U.S. Secretary of the Treasury during the Washington and Adams administrations as Alexander Hamilton's successor. When Wolcott died in 1833, he was the last surviving cabinet member of the Washington administration.
