Roman Glass Vessels - Bottle + Cup
Roman Glass Vessels - Bottle + Cup
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A set of 2 free blown glass vessels - a bottle and a cup - exhibiting soft turquoise hues. First is a cup with a stable base and rough pontil scar, a bulbous body, a gently corseted shoulder accentuated with a band of glass trailing, and a flared rim with a rounded lip for comfort when drinking. The larger vessel is a bottle or flask with a slightly concave base, a bell-shaped body, a cylindrical neck, and an everted rim with an in-folded lip. Both vessels are enveloped with attractive rainbow-hued iridescence that nicely complement their blue-green coloration. Size of largest (bottle): 3.625" W x 6.375" H (9.2 cm x 16.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

#172318
Condition
Both pieces have light abrasions, micro-bubbling within glass matrices, weathering film, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Cup has a rough pontil scar beneath the base. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Great rainbow iridescence throughout.
